Sometimes a movie can be so promising at first and then goes into boredom status in the middle of its running time. I don't remember seeing Claire Dolan's movie poster displayed in cinemas in Indonesia, besides a movie with explicit content like this would've been be cut by heavy censorship anyhow, leaving the viewers wondering what part do they miss. I was gonna recommend this to husband and wife who's looking for a drama which spiced up by sensuality and extra nudity, but then I have doubts.
27-year old Claire Dolan (Katrin Cartlidge) is a professional prostitute who only serves high-class men with lotsa money in their pockets. Interestingly she has a pimp, Roland (Colm Meaney of Blueberry (2004)), who seems to genuinely care about her dying mother. He can be strict at times but still has this threatening charm in him, Unfortunately, Claire's mother passed away. Facing this sad fact, Claire decides to leave prostitution for good and her meeting with a kindhearted taxi driver, Elton (Vincent D'Onofrio of The First Turn-On! (1983)), only strengthens her intention. But certainly it would not be that easy with all the money problems, pimp problems and personal issues that Claire Dolan have to deal with before she can live the life she wants. And could she?
Speaking of the storyline, it's pretty much very basic without anything pivotal to lock our attention. The opening scene is very promising and right from the very first minute, I had this feeling that music score and lead actress are this erotic drama greatest assets. First half of the movie, Claire Dolan is a very engaging film for the adults with real-life problems presented on screen accompanied by such haunting music and with dialogue so simple and realistic. And I say for adults because not only that this film full of topless nudity and sex scenes between Claire Dolan and her clients or her lover, but the problems she's facing probably understood better by those who know how hard it is to earn money or living in the big city.
Katrin Cartlidge is amazing in Claire Dolan, she looks so depressed, stern, full of thoughts as we could really feel her frustration, with only minimum gestures she makes, we could already feel the emotions of her character. Unfortunately, Katrin has already passed away but you can enjoy her performance in From Hell (2001) opposite Johnny Depp and in the surprisingly awesome drama from Bosnia and Herzegovina titled No Man's Land (2001). Claire Dolan is a serious movie without any small pint of comedy or anything light-hearted. It is not cheesy and it's not blatantly exploitation, but in the second half of it, I started to notice that probably the director did use nudity to pad the running time. Unnecessary nudity.
> A more light approach in the world of Pimp, Prostitue and Lover: Combien tu m'aimes? AKA How Much Do You Love Me (2005) featuring Monica Bellucci and Gérard Depardieu.
> See these movies for a really engaging and beautifully told erotic drama: Romance (1999) and Antares (2004).
