Always give a sequel a chance! No matter how mediocre the original movie is. Cold Prey 3 is a surprisingly good slasher film coming from Norway. This film serves as a prequel to the previous 2 entries in Cold Prey trilogy.
Set in year 1976 in Jotunheimen mountain in Norway, a family with a boy is staying at a remote building surrounded only by white field of snow. The 11-year old boy with a striking birthmark on his face is treated full of hate by his father and not for long the boy named Gunnar goes psycho and kills both his parents.
Twelve years later, 6 friends are going camping and they reach Jotunheimen with the help of a kind police officer, Einar (Terje Ranes), who takes them there and tells them to be on the exact same spot at 2 pm the next day if they ever want to go back because it'll take 6 hours on foot and the usual bus driver is taking a day off. And since this is the 80s, no commercial cell phone to be seen.
Hedda, Knut, Siri, Magne, Simen and Anders are just ordinary young people who's just trying to enjoy their holiday at this beautiful mountain where the lake is pristine and the trees give strikingly wonderful backdrop to their activities. Hedda (Ida Marie Bakkerud) and her friends initially want to spend the night at the abandoned hotel, but they later decide to sleep in the great outdoor. Little do they know, a big tall hunter is roaming the area and he doesn't know the difference between a human being and an animal. Will they survive the mountain?
Very different with Cold Prey (2006) in terms of shooting location and also more intense than Cold Prey 2 (2008), Cold Prey 3 sits on top of the food chain. Admittedly there are some resemblances with the Hollywood slasher franchise, Wrong Turn (2003) or other backwoods slasher, but Cold Prey does provide an eerie experience into slasher realm. Their characters are ordinary but we can feel for them and even care for what might happen to them. There are several instances when goriness will take the audience's attention to another level oozing the feeling of squeamishness, nevertheless, the story here is more interesting because the writer imbue some level of humanity to the killer. He is no longer a mask man which tries to look menacing but simply goofy, he can now groan, moan, gasp and his face is shown clear and this makes him more menacing than his so-so appearances in either Fritt vilt or Fritt vilt 2.
Cold Prey 3 AKA Fritt vilt 3 takes the advantage of the beautiful shooting location of Jotunheimen, a mountainous area in Norway which by the way, it really makes you want to go there. The terror is inserted pervasively and the chasing scene is intense and the movie is closed with dramatic finale. Frankly, there is nothing new in Cold Prey 3, but this old menu is still delicious if you're in the mood.
