DANGEROUS WORRY DOLLS
Storyline:2 stars

Overall:
2 stars

We don't get a lot of women in the prison these days. Especially after a TV-series called Prison Break stormed in and engaged our attention in watching TV. While men in prison flicks are usually harsh and brutal and are mostly involving fighting, women in prison movies while also have some brutal aspects on them, but they have this special cheesy formula which are usually evokes another feeling besides the element of shock in the viewers' mind. Bizarre, nudity and domination. Whew...such heavy words.

Dangerous Worry Dolls' storyline is figuratively almost drop dead, we don't get to see this type of horror movie very often in the last couple of years. DWDolls, that falls to the subgenre of women-in-prison film, revolves around the life of Eva (Jessica Morris). Eva is actually a nice girl who has to spend time in the Meredith Detention Center for Women for being a lookout on a liquor store robbery that takes the life of its cashier. In this harsh place, she later befriends the vanilla Mouse (Cheri Themer), but undoubtedly being a new girl, she has to face the oppression of Kim (Meredith McClain) and her gang, not to mention a guard with bizarre sexual interest named Carl (Dilio Nunez) and of course the queen of the Prison, the heartless Ms. Ivar (Deb Snyder). In the place where hope seems to be an extreme rarity, Kim is given a set of worry dolls by her daughter on a visit. One of the inmates tells Kim how to use them, which is by telling the Worry Dolls her worries, then put them under her pillow, and hoping that the next morning things will be different.

And it is different. It is a fresh new start for Eva. She doesn't feel any fear or distress, Eva simply smiles all day. But not just that, now she could deal with any problem at hands, but unfortunately all that good things comes with a cost. She has a zit on her forehead that seems to grow bigger and nastier. Nevertheless, for Eva, it's time to settle some scores.

What we have from Dangerous Worry Dolls is the cliché Women in Prison movie. The ingredients are pretty much the same throughout. A nice girl being sentenced to do some time, she received cruel treatment from her inmates, sexually-sadistic guards and dictatorially domineering matron. It's all pretty much the same if not for the clever twist for incorporating Worry Dolls into the plot. Using dolls that are originated from Guatemala actually makes the premise promising, even though using dolls in a horror film is absolutely not a novelty, for we have watched one of the most famous doll horror movies in Child's Play series. Nevertheless it's an unusual thing to be inserted into a prison horror film that usually employs fear factors from the real life. Anyway, these wicked supernatural dolls that could do horrible stuff could be used as a bridge to treat the audience with several aspects that usually accompany a women in prison film. Excessive nudity, quite gory gores which lead to great act of revenge.

Sadly and sadly, Dangerous Worry Dolls is timid. Yes, a timid horror movie. The director seemed hesitate to explore every possible angle that a women-in-prison film could take advantage from. Take for example, the routine prison shower scene, while there is one in this horror movie, but it seems awkward. There is only one forced nude scene by one girl at the shower that lasts only for ten seconds. And about the gore, there is not much to say about this one, although it would make the average moviegoers cringe at the kitchen scene, but they are generally not too shocking. But I guess the act of revenge is a satisfying one, all the wicked people in this detention center get what they deserve. However, the flaws I mentioned above may not be obvious for moviegoers who are not familiar with this type of movie, so probably in general opinion, those could not be considered as downsides.

Fortunately will all those shortcomings, the acting quality of the cast is pretty good. Although they may seem to be over-the-top sometimes but it's actually fit the tone of the movie. All in all, it's just too bad that a horror movie with a very high potential to be swell still seems to be half-baked by the filmmakers. It's got an interesting premise, a bit of comedy, and an independent movie charm. But for now, Dangerous Worry Dolls is certainly worth a rent, if..., you crave for a women-in-prison movie. Otherwise, you could safely skip it.
