Overall:
4.5 stars

There is this content feeling when you're finally able to hold a copy of your fave movie. Seeing it a couple of times without extra paying is the pleasure of having a DVD. When Daybreakers was screened in Makassar, South Sulawesi, around May 2011. It's the only western movie available, the other options were Indonesian movies belongs to genres of sex-horror or serious drama. Those weren't nice pickings when traveling... I wanted an action or gripping thriller, and Daybreakers was a darn fine choice. This movie was actually already screened in Jakarta around July-August 2010.

The year is 2019, the majority of population in Earth has turned into vampires caused by an outbreak which triggered an evolution back before 2010. The vampires are just like humans, nothing is different. They have office buildings, subway system, and even hobos... because basically the vampires now were used to be humans too. Except that they are now living from drinking blood of those who are still humans who live in hide and fear. The government constantly sends their military personnel to hunt for humans which will be farmed afterwards. However, a major concern is rising because the government could no longer provide the society with enough blood rations. This fact creates havoc and upheaval with many incidents throughout the world and even young vampires desperately robbing the graves only to find a pint of human blood.

But the government has something more extremely disturbing fact to handle because once a vampire suffers from the lack of human blood, they will start to deform into a vicious and ugly looking bat-creature called Subsider which no longer holds any form of sanity. And the man responsible to invent a fake blood is Dr. Edward Bloom (Ethan Hawke). Aside from his job desc as Chief Hematologist for sinister Pharmaceuticals Company, Edward is actually a pacifist... He does not like to hurt human and even though he struggles to find the chemical combination but still no result is to be made, until one night he encounter a female human, Audrey Benett (Claudia Karvan of Long Weekend (2008)), who introduces him to a new groundbreaking way that could possibly be the answer. However, the rest of the government are not as nice as Edward and even his own brother, Frankie (Michael Dorman of Triangle (2009)), is a dedicated human hunter. Will Edward find the cure? What will happen to both human and vampire societies?

Daybreakers film still 2

Daybreakers is different with other vampire movies presenting the horror of the common-acceptable knowledge what a vampire might do to humans. No, no, no Daybreakers is using the scientific fact which I've read across the internet that vampirism is actually a scientifically-acknowledge disease which has zilch thing to do with supernatural phenomena. The story in Daybreakers would make the audience feel the fear and repulsion over the vampire society but also feel sorry and pity for them. You will see how disgusting the government is when they farming humans and bleeding them to death but also witness how desperate the vampire civilians are trying to drink some blood and becomes a riot. Yes... The writer really knows how to combine metropolitan life with vampire trait into something that more of a sad insinuation of reality in the world.

Usually a doomsday movie or a sci-fi apocalyptic flick presenting a story easy to enjoy but hard to believed. But through Daybreakers and the all-round solid performance of the cast we could really feel the fear of a society like this. There is no cheesiness in Daybreakers. If Blade movies gives you that awesome thrill of fighting, Twilight movies gives a beautiful romanticism then Daybreakers gives a sense of reality-relating fear of the society and it ends it all with an epic ending! Highly Recommended!
