There's a saying that goes "there's a child in every man". So upon watching Death Race, I guessed it's best for me to unleash that child inside me. And what a happy hours I spend watching this brainless action flick.
In every review, I always tell you the main storyline of a movie, but in this case, I have to make it a bit meticulous since the plot is utterly simple. Because Death Race isn't a movie to be enjoyed by its story or dialogue. The story is onion-skin-thin and the script for most part is driveling. Jason Statham stars as Jensen Ames the most unlucky guy in the world for on one night he is framed for murdering his own beloved wife. Jensen then later incarcerated in the Terminal Private Prison run by a despicably cruel woman name Hennessey (Joan Allen). Considering Jensen's record of experience in the racing track, Hennessy offers him to be the next "Frankenstein", the legendary driver who died on the Death Race track.
Death Race is an extreme race where every car is heavily-armored with rockets, machine guns, flame thrower, smokescreen, caltrops, and napalm plus other weapons or shields (whew...). It's a race where any driver could kill or eliminate each other with any means necessary. If Jensen could win this one last race, he will be granted a freedom. Jensen, however, soon learns that there is something more than meets the eye. Will he win this race? And will he ever get his freedom?
Crash! Bang! And Ka-boom! Those words say it all. It's all you gonna get and it's all you gonna remember. Death Race is an action movie where Acting capacity is not badly needed, but a handful of daredevil stuntmen and women, a very skilled pyrotechies and a set of extraordinarily modified cars! And not to forget Natalie Martinez (as Jensen's navigator) who graces the screen with her sexy figure, don't expect to see her do anything "bad" though.
What I'm trying to convey is Death Race is a boys' thing and a d!ck-flick, as opposed to chick-flick. It's too bad that the camerawork is sometimes over-stylized that it's on the brink of giving the audience physical headache, but the chasing scenes are solid and interesting. And thankfully the script doesn't forget Jason Statham's martial arts ability, he still kicks some ass in the name of revenge, and that scene it's pretty agitating.
Death Race is for moviegoers who probably upset with 2 fast 2 furious and something similar to that quality or simply want to see how cars being maneuvered to destroy others. It's pretty much like video game though. I personally like it, but Death Race is not something very memorable.
