On the level with you all, having decided to watch Disaster Movie, I actually didn't set my hopes too high when sitting on the cinema and lost amidst all those teenagers. But being prejudice against it would be wrong, so I bought a large size popcorn, a pack of bubble gums and a large size soda, as salvation "tools" in case this spoof flick got really boring.
But Hey! Luckily I was wrong this time. Disaster Movie turned out to be far better than other previous spoof films, like Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans or Superhero Movie to name a few. And although (although) Popcorn did help fix the situation, still Popcorn and stuff were just fringe fun. If I'm sounded a bit too happy, it's because I'm glad to have watched a subgenre of comedy (parody) that could actually entertain, even if only to be compared with aforementioned spoof films.
Disaster Movie, even though bears the name "Disaster", only spoofs two major disaster movies, which are I am Legend and Cloverfield. And telling you the storyline would be kinda silly actually, but I guess it's still necessary. Will (Matt Lanter) has just got the most bizarre dream in his entire life, for he wears prehistoric outfit and apparently being stalked by a saber tooth tiger behind the tall grasses, which turns out to be Amy Winehouse (Nicole Parker). She gives the premonition of the end of the world which will happen on August 29th 2008! Waking up, Will then having his sweet sixteen birthday when he's actually already 25 years old.
Will's sweet 16 party, where Jessica Simpson (Nicole Parker), Justin Timberlake (Jonas Neal), and even the creepy dude from No Country for Old Men also participate, has to be stopped when suddenly the earth shakes violently. Will along with his three friends, Juno (Crista Flanagan), Calvin (Gary "G-Thang" Johnson) and Lisa (Kim Kardashian) tries to reach for the-recently-dumped-girlfriend of Will, Amy (Vanessa Minnillo), which trapped in the museum. Along the way, they have to encounter Hannah Montana (Crista Flanagan), Sex and the City's girls and the weirdest of all... the trash-metal version of Alvin and the Chipmunks!
The weirdest and probably the funniest figures and scenes of all, Alvin and the Rabies-Chipmunks. Boy these Chipmunks Rock! An effective joke that made me (and also the chatty teenagers besides me) laugh out loud. However, this spoof movie exceeds the previous movies not solely because of the jokes. In fact, there is more stupidity than funny quips or acts. Disaster Movie owes to two musical scenes, The first would be the cheerful dance and song as you can see below (in the middle), and the other one is the fu*ked-up f*ck song which starts and ends with nothing than the confession of all the characters in this film including superheroes like The Hulk, Batman, Iron Man, Beowulf, Jumper and Hellboy that they fu*k each other. Hmmm, Hate it or Love it song, I suppose.
Flaws are here and there scattered everywhere. Why do they put Superheroes in a Disaster Movie. We already watch Spoof of those superhumans a few months before. And where is the disaster really? But the biggest flaw is that the filmmakers simply crammed all known (read: recently popular) popular culture icon into one arguably without thinking they're relevant or not to the whole storyline.
Ah yes, before I forgot, these are some of the others pop culture icons being spoofed: 10,000 bc, Enchanted, Superbad, Kung Fu Panda, Indiana Jones, Speed Racer, Hancock, High School Musical, The Love Guru and Night at the Museum. Now, if you're a teenager like those in theater or simply want to enjoy some brainless un-emotional fun with bunch of popcorn (with Butter? Hmmmm), you would probably should see it. I personally bought the video to memorize what's hip around 2008, in a stupidly-relaxing way of course.
