The Movie Review

It was Thursday and the date was 28 July 2011. It means... only a day before the D-Day of Harry Potter 7.2 looong-awaited premiere in Indonesia. Indonesian moviegoers had faced difficulties prior to the fixed premiere schedule for there was high possibility that we wouldn't be able to see Harry Potter (or other major Box-Office films) here. And some of us even had flown to Singapore just to catch Thor (2011) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 (2011).

So, when we had known Harry Potter was eventually gonna be screened, the reactions were overwhelming! Major Cinema chains in our country like 21 Cineplex and Blitz Megaplex have been allocating most of their studios in each cinema only for Harry Potter alone --both 2D and 3D. For example: 7 out 11 studios at Blitz Megaplex Grand Indonesia or 6 out of 9 studios at Plaza Senayan XXI were solely about Harry

Potter and somehow someway this Harry Potter frenzy started to be sickening. To avoid further nausea, I used that lovely Thursday to go buy Harry Potter tickets. And man, I was glad to have gone there, the line queue is miniscule compared to today (Friday 29) and there were still many vacant seats!

Empty queue of Harry Potter 7.2 on Thursday

People were talking all about horrible queuing and everything, but see it yourself from the picture below of how cozy waiting in a line that was practically "normal". Anyhow, they seemed surprised that I bought another ticket of Dylan Dog :-) well apparently people were there only to buy Harry Potter tickets! In the studio, there were only around 14 people with mostly adults or couples and it seemed we all had fun seeing this so-called "failure" which was labeled as Box Office Flop.

Based on the comic book titled Dylan Dog written by Tiziano Sclavi, the film tells the story of a mysterious man named Dylan Dog (Brandon Routh of Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008)) who used to work as a renowned detective dealing with paranormal cases. He's the appointed mediator between the world of undead and the world of human. In Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, every undead creature are living normally but they are concealed in disguise (think: Men in Black (1997)). Dylan is retired though after a horrible incident had befallen on his fiancée. But he is forced to once more wield the weapon after a mysterious case that kills the father of his client, Elizabeth (Anita Briem of Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D (2008)). So with the help of his comical undead friend, Marcus (Sam Huntington), Dylan is going to hunt for the real monster roaming both world. Will he find it?

I know I don't have anything very good to say about Dylan Dog, except that it actually could amuse those who came without an expectation. The bottom line is you see a dark comedy version of western supernatural figures such as werewolves or vampires or zombies or ghouls, but it's not a cheap jokes or crude like a lame spoof but a good one and even sorta subtle. How can you take a movie so seriously when there is a scene depicting recently dead zombies getting together to support each other just like alcoholic anonymous group, only this is Zombie anonymous. To make it short, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is 30% action (credits to Brandon Routh and Anita Briem), 30% horror (cool CGI/Effects/MakeUp/Creatures) and 30% comedy (satisfying comical performance of Sam Huntington from Not Another Teen Movie (2001)). The other 10% is the absent of your overly-thinking brain. Good movie for any day if you are looking something easygoing and humorous.
