It is a common fact that a sequel of a movie is seemingly cursed to be worse than the original film. But anomaly does sometimes happen. Escape from the Bronx or also known as Fuga dal Bronx or also as 1990: Bronx Warriors 2 is a much more entertaining piece of trashy cinema than its predecessor, 1990: The Bronx Warriors... Boy, I surely could easily put to sleep seeing 1990: The Bronx Warriors, a movie which I think could not stand the test of time. I mean, yes the movie was good back in the 80s, especially when you're still a kid (with limited knowledge of movies). But now..., 1990: The Bronx Warriors is a mere blah! On the contrary, Escape from the Bronx still is... a good time-killer. But the catch is, you can't understand the story in the sequel if you haven't watched the first one. So guys, just suck the first one in and then entertain yourself with the sequel.
Picking up exactly where the first movie left off, Bronx is still under fire. After the turmoil that has killed so many gang members in Bronx, the place is even more deserted than before. Because now, a huge company called GC Corporation based in New York is going to exterminate and wipe out completely all the buildings as well as the residents of Bronx. But sadly not through humane ways, the GC Corp instead opted to simply kill them all. Fortunately, a persistent young female reporter, Moon Grey (Valeria D'Obici), is determined to save the people of the Bronx from eradication by going into the war zone herself. Meanwhile, our hero Trash (Mark Gregory), is a lone fighter now without any followers. And there is a new leader in Bronx by the name of Dablone (Antonio Sabato) which acts as the leader of all the fighters in Bronx, a unification of Bronx Warriors (or what's left of it).
And on the GC Corporation side, the execs of GC hires a ruthless man named Floyd Wrangler (Henry Silva) who fonds of killing human beings. His troops does not hesitate in killing the Bronx residents (including Trash's father and mother) by shooting, rigging them with bombs or burning them with flame-throwers which makes even the President of GC himself is disgusted by these savage act of murders.
Then, Moon proposes one crazy idea of finishing the problem by kidnapping the president of GC Corporation, Henry G. Clark (Ennio Girolami). And to do this, Trash and Moon Grey have to ask the help of the greatest and the craziest warrior of the Bronx, Strike (Giancarlo Prete) and Strike's little boy, Junior (Alessandro Prete). Will Trash, Moon and Strike be able to save their home?
The parade of trampoline explosions
Mark Gregory is still in the lead role as Trash, the former leader of the Riders gang which has been eliminated in the first movie. I have mentioned earlier in the previous review that Mark talks and runs like a woman, thus making him less than impressive of a hero. But in this movie, Mark at least covers that up with increasing amounts of shooting, jumping and even helmet punching. Trash is so great that he has become an excellent marksman, so good that he can take down a helicopter using only handgun! This is my favorite shot, just wait and see the pilot of the exploding chopper pops out and swirling in the air just like those G.I. Joe action figures! Love this scene to the core of it! Hehehe...
The tone of Escape from the Bronx is much more serious, and I seriously welcome that. It focuses more on the action scenes instead of the drama or the campy aspects. The movie does not focus itself so hard on the costumes anymore or on the varied unique appearance of the gangs. It's now about shooting, hunting, fighting, killing and other things related to adrenaline. The pacing is faster, perfect fit of the story. Furthermore, the writers and other crew have also done a good job in picking the right angles of the shots, in choosing the right music as well as better in editing. By the way fellas, just make sure you get uncut copy alright, the scenes being cut are pretty gory but they're still in a campy fun tone and not disturbing.
I think it's not fair for a post-apocalyptic trash film like this to be flayed. If you're looking for the real and original and more big-budgeted version of this movie, you better take a look at Escape from New York (1981). Escape from the Bronx was should be watched by fans of Italian Cinema of Science Fiction genre. And I doubt it that you will catch this on TV, so I'd say Escape from the Bronx is some kind of a rarity, but... It would worth your effort to find the movie. Just make sure you know what you're expecting.... A good piece of B-movie.
> It's not complete yet without seeing Enzo's: The New Barbarians (1983).
> If you dig this old-school gangs stuff, then this title is a must for you: The Warriors (1979).
