European countries, infatuation, backpackers and pen pal? These are the underlying theme of EuroTrip. But what are those gotta do with the drooling picture up there? Oh, that's just a hint how wacky, dirty and riotous EuroTrip will be. To understand the concept is easy, if a real backpacker in the real world could have so much fun compared to a suitcase-carrying tourist, what would you think will happen to the guys in EuroTrip? One friggin' memorable experience that is.
EuroTrip tells about a retardo in lingo named Scott Thomas who has just graduated from highschool and at the same time being dumped by Fiona (Kristin Kreuk), his girlfriend. The miserable Scotty (Scott Mechlowicz) shouts his girl's name "Fionaaaa" while crying which is videotaped by his family and is later happily viewed back by his bratty little brother, Bert (Nial Iskhakov) and Scott's best friend, Cooper (Jacob Pitts). Meanwhile Scott has a pen pal from Germany who has helped him do his homework. Scotty's pen pal friend's name is Mieke, and when Mieke knows that Scott is now single and wants to meet him in person, the retardo Scotty is terrified and crudely replies to Mieke saying that to never contact him again. Scotty's reasoning is that Mieke is a guy who is presumably a sexual predator.
Scott and Bert then have an argument about who Mieke is, Scott shows to Bert a picture of a guy named Mieke and a hot blonde girl named Jan. But after being explained by Bert that Mieke is a girl's name similar to Michelle, the love-struck Scott decides to go to Germany to find Mieke (Jessica Böhrs) and tells Mieke he loves her. Of course the sex-crazed Cooper, who often gives Scotty bad advice, will not want to miss this opportunity to fulfill his steamy sexual desires. And up they go first to England where their journey will get wackier when they encounter the nasty hooligans. Things are getting very interesting when Scotty and Cooper are teamed up with the "Worst Twins Ever" Jenny (Michelle Trachtenberg) and Jamie (Travis Wester) in Paris. Will Scotty finds his dream girl? And will European countries ready to welcome these crazy young people?
EuroTrip was produced by the people behind similar wacky teen/road flicks such as Road Trip (2000) and Old School (2003), and although it was directed by a different person, but the atmosphere still pretty much the same. Hilarious experience stuffed into one excitingly funny motion picture. The formula, the pattern, and the plot is very much Road Trip. When you hear Scott says "I'm going to Germany" is just like when E.L. (in Road Trip) says "Road Trip!", and that is a cue for a whole tour of wackiness and fleshfest. From Ohio, America to England, France, Netherlands, Slovakia, Germany and Italy, our guys are stepping their originally-prude feet into lands filled with crazy hilarious experiences. EuroTrip has so many wacky things going on in the movie that I found it nearly impossible to feel bored. From riding with the hooligans, nudist-wannabes, a visit to a wrong erotic club, hitch hike, robbed, stranded, and those are just a few of them.
What I like about this teen comedy film is how they pay attention to detail, not some sort of blooper-free details, but details that are usually ignored. Those things are like the sound of the e-mail that says "Mail! mother-f" (I can't get this out of my head :-)), the wacky Hasselhoff appearance, the dog that bites a man's palm, the hitler's kid, and the conversation between Scotty's mom and dad about Scotty's vacation.
And as I have said earlier about EuroTrip predecessor which are Road Trip and Old School, the script puts a lot of thought into the main characters. We know who they are and why we should root for the lead character (which is Scotty). This type of comedy flick is almost always engaging, we as the audiences are not merely laugh at the jokes, at the scenes or at the funny-figures displayed on screen, but also feel like we are following a solid storyline. We are following a comedy movie as in a motion picture that has actors, plot, nice lines of dialogue, and of course the arsenal of a comedy film, the jokes.
Talking more about technical aspects, the theme of traveling to Europe although filled with lots of women flesh & nude scenes and wacky storyline, will not set the mood right without good cinematography and soundtracks. While the beauty of Europe (either the women or the sceneries are guaranteed), but the soundtracks would have been a major drawbacks had the filmmakers chosen the wrong ones. Thankfully that is not the case, ranging from rock music to soft French-language music, the soundtracks are perfect to portray the occasion and to involve our emotion. I could even hear old songs like "99 Luftballons" or "Morning Train 9 to 5") and especially one song that is seriously composed for this movie, the catchy "Scotty Doesn't Know" song which is performed (in the movie) by the surprising appearance of Matt Damon.
I myself always consider movies with so many hilarious and new things to watch as good investment of time, because we got to see many entertaining scenes that conclude one thing, Valuable Re-playable Viewing. This is of course a different matter with spoof movies such as, let's say Date Movie (2006), Epic Movie (2007), or Disaster movie (2008), because while those spoof films also have so many things going around, but those things are loosely-connected and for me personally those movies would be nice to replayed merely just to remember the popular culture references and icons.
With EuroTrip, I had so much fun watching it, even though it presents an ending scene that we all already guess the corny but fun conclusion, but Love Rules and EuroTrip rocks!
