I'm just gonna borrow several lines from its trailer...
'New Line Cinema presents:'
'That Asian guy from American Pie (1999)'
'That Indian guy from Van Wilder (2002)'
'And from that white guy who directed Dude Where's My Car? (2000)'
Judging from the lines above, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle should be a great comedy. And even though those lines are promotional effort, but this film is actually is a hilarious one. This stoner comedy flick is a must watch for you guys.
It's always fun to watch stoner movie, it's wacky, crazy and easy, concluded to one great brainless entertainment, and so does this 1st entry from Harold & Kumar franchise.
The movies centers on two buddies named Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kall Pen). Though being best buds, they have the exact opposite personality, Harold Lee, who is an Asian, is the silent type guy who always obeys the rules and is afraid to take a risk, while Kumar Patel, who is an Indian, is more 'wilder' and just love to fight the rules. Both have their own problems, Harold is often picked on by his work friends and becoming their work horse, plus he got this enormous crush on a girl on his flat named Maria (Paula Garcés). While Kumar is forced by his father to become a doctor just like him. However, on one evening, they have the same problem, craving for White Castle burgers! Drooling over the advertisement on TV, both of them decide to head to the nearest White Castle. But, it seems their supposed-to-be-simple journey become an adventure full of unpredictable things. Could this stoner dudes finally get to White Castle?
The real reason why I watched this movie in the first place, is to know that it was directed by the same person who directed Aston Kucther and Seann William Scott to do crazy things on Dude Where's My Car. And so, thanks to Danny Leiner, also Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg (the writers), I could have the same exciting watching experience as with Dude Where's My Car, no, it's even better! Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle is not just wacky but it's also hilarious and really far from being boring. Moreover the performances of the cast are very good, which include brief appearances of Eddie Kaye Thomas from American Pie and Ryan Reynolds from Van Wilder.
Typical of wacky adventure, you got many elements put into one. Elements that are highly unrelated but managed to be glued into one movie. We got a raccoon, a cheetah, racist cop, hot Latina girl, nasty British girls who fart a lot (and I mean A LOT!), career-obsessed Asian guys, skater punks, weed-selling mama's boy, creepy hillbilly, seductive wife, honest but angry black guy, honest and contented black guy, and the most shocking of all we got Doogie Howser MD (Neil Patrick Harris) doing some pretty Un-Doctor-y acts.
Usually those elements would be an incomprehensible mess, but in this comedy film, they contribute funny moments of their own. Probably the most disappointing flaw is the use of bad visual effects. The effects are really un-2004-like. And the relationship between Harold and Maria should have been put to better use, instead of a forced side plot. And it's such a loss that the ending is Not shocking or surprising like those wacky elements up there.
But dude, it's so fun to watch a stoner movie. And so if you like gross-out jokes, meaningful-but-maybe-inappropriate-bit-racist dialogues about the African-American guy, the Asian, Indian and White guys, adventure of non-stop wackiness, then dude! You should check this one out, it's sweet!
