You know, a good superhero movie doesn't always have to be based on comics released by Marvel or DC. Yes of course those companies have released some notable films, like Spider-man, Superman, X-Men, Blade and Daredevil. But a company named Dark Horse comics this year will released one of its best, Hellboy.
Hellboy, directed by a man who also directed Blade II, is headlined by a seasoned actor, Ron Perlman who also starred as a supporting character in Blade II. But the strongest point of Hellboy is perhaps the storyline. Different and weird, but definitely good.
On the level with you all, the overall quality of Hellboy came as a fantastic surprise to me, since I recall the poor quality of last year Marvel's Hulk (2003), it's so nice to see another good superhero flick. Hellboy is a big juice of fun injected to the realm of superhero genre. A nice combination of heroic act, sacrifice, cool visual effects, enjoyable pace and cute comedy just like in Spider-man. However if Peter Parker (Spider-man) could be said as a sweet guy, then Hellboy is a real badas$.
Near the end of World War II, Nazi's special division of supernatural activity tries to evoke a demon from hell, in order to regain power. Luckily, allied army already there first hand to stop this devilish scheme. However they're late, for the little demon has already summoned. A professor named Broom decides not to kill it but instead takes him as his child, and names it Hellboy. Professor Broom later on is the head of Bureau of Paranormal Research & Defense where Hellboy is the main power behind it. Hellboy along with his friend the fish guy Abe Sapien's main duty is to bring back order when supernatural activity occurs, however on one night they're facing the most dangerous enemy they would have ever encountered, the man who used to work for the Nazi, the man who actually summons Hellboy into this world. And he has his own agenda for Hellboy, the real intention why Hellboy is brought up into this world in the first time.
I could say, Hellboy has a bright future, probably as merchandises, keychain, or games. Why is that? Simple the characters of Hellboy himself, Sparky, Abe Sapien and their nemesis are awesome and unique. Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Rupert Evans and every actor has successfully enlivened their respective character just like they are real. Now, that's kudos for the dialogue too. The scene where the big burly but childish Hellboy is jealous of John Myers when John dates Sparky, and when Hellboy hides his cigarette in front of his father, those are cute and funny. This is what superhero genre is all about, to never forget to put some fun in it. Not that all-serious but thin in its storyline like in Hulk, for instance.
Watching a real badass superhero with cursed words coming out of his mouth is really welcomed. How entertaining it is when Hellboy beats the hell out of his enemies while spitting out "fancy" words. And the visual effects of Sparky's fire in her hand and body is cool, and the birth of one of Hellboy's enemy (Sammael) is awesome...Heck, the visual effect for almost every scenes is cool.
Those entire good facet combined in an exciting storyline that even involves nazi and adolf hitler, makes Hellboy is one heck of a superhero movie.
