In this millennium era, horror aficionados are already accustomed with so many slasher movies, but from the era of 80s, there was this stupid corny cheesy sleazy title which will make any exploitation movie fan all over the world focus their attention to this title because of the unashamed nail-in-the-head keywords they use... Hollywood, Chainsaw, Hookers. For crying out loud people, if you still think of this title seriously, ought to check that funny bones of yours.
Directed by one of exploitation cinema directors, Fred Olen Ray, it tells about a current case which is handled by a private detective, Jack Chandler (Jay Richardson), in Los Angeles. In mid June, suddenly pieces of dismembered bodies started to be found all over the places. Actually Jack's main case is to find a missing girl named Samantha Kelso (Linnea Quigley) which seemingly tied to a secret chainsaw cult led by a big bearded man (Gunnar Hansen). And so this inept detective ventures the night club to seek the girl but it would only drag him deeper into bigger and deadly trouble involving buzzing steel wielded by psychotic hooker, Mercedes (Michelle Bauer), in a secret mission.
Acting Class Dismissed!
Stupid, dumb, but utterly fun and highly effective to put a smile on somebody's frowning face. A heckuva medicine for the serious type of fella who works too hard and just wanna have fun afternoon with a bucket full of caramel popcorn and a large coke to ease the mind. Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers delivers a wacky combination of gore and slapstick comedy. Unfortunately, as the story progresses, boredom prevails... because basically other than those cheesy gory and nudity, the joke fails, the drama fails, the camerawork is lacklustre and most important of all, the story is highly mind-numbingly boring! But interestingly, the final scene which gives us the final showdown between two almost naked girls battling each other out using chainsaws is kinda heart-pounding especially knowing those chainsaws are real and those two girls seem to have difficulty in lifting it up, let alone using it....
Perhaps the punch line of all is seeing Gunnar Hansen (the feared Leatherface of Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)) running and waving his hands like a girl and seeing him interacting with such wooden/stupid expression with other characters. They don't call Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers as exploitation film for nothing, because the main ingredient is no other than presenting all the lead actresses in skimpy outfit and for some scenes in totally nude-mode. Well, what can you really expect for a movie titled this way and produced in low-budget, right?
