Not every cartoon conveys shallow messages, and not all of them involving simple comedy. If you are looking for a movie which is both amusing and philosophically-educating to your young ones, this is the right movie.
Horton Hears a Who! which is headlined by Jim Carrey tells a story of a cute elephant named Horton, who on one day while playing with his buddies, hears a soft sound coming from a speck! No one believes Horton, but Horton strongly believes that somebody or something lives on that yellow speck. And it's true, there is someone lives in that teeny-tiny thing and not just one or two, but a whole village which is called The Whoville.
Horton (Jim Carrey) is then eventually able to make contact and communicate with the mayor of Whoville, Ned (Steve Carell). The thoughtful Horton puts the speck on a flower and braves himself to go to a place high up in the mountain where Horton thinks as the safest place for Whoville. But his action provokes Sour Kangaroo (Carol Burnett) to get rid of the speck because she worries that all the children in the Jungle of Nool (where they live) will start to imagine ridiculous thing as Horton does. Will Horton ever get to save the Whoville?
As chubby as Horton is, this animation movie gives a heavy set of entertainment. Just look at Horton's "shape", it's endearing, probably your daughters want to stop by at the nearest toy store because of him. And although most of the time we are only going to see Horton's figure (and his buttocks) but with steady pace, Horton Hears a Who! won't let you feel bored. From chasing the speck, machine-gunned by the bullying monkeys to be chased by a vulture and even an anime surprise where Horton becomes a great martial arts practitioner. The colour palette which the filmmakers choose is very soft to the eyes, with pastel colours for almost all the animals, it sets a relaxing mood for its audiences.
Compliment also goes to Jim Carrey who voices Horton excellently, especially considering that Horton speaks considerably fast with many, many words coming out of his mouth. And as you might probably wonder, is there any heartbreaking moment? Yes there is, but it's not that serious. If I were still a boy, I would be happy about this condition. It embarrassed me when I had to pretend that I didn't shed a tear. Horton Hears a Who!, even though by the look of it, is a simple film about the animal kingdom, but hopefully the message it tries to convey lingers in children's minds and adults alike.
