HUNT To KILL
Storyline:3.5 stars
Cast:3.5 stars
Ending:2.5 stars
Overall:
3.5 stars

Waking up at 2 am in the still of the night, an action flick is one of the choices to keep me awake until dawn comes. Snatching this baby out of its cover, I was hoping at least for some minor action simply to avoid hitting the pillows. Whow, never thought Hunt to Kill would be a good old-school action. Steve Austin is in the lead role as the mountain man ala Sylvester Stallone's Cliffhanger (1993) and it also features the Fist of the North Star (1995) lead actor, Gary Daniels.

Jim Rhodes (Steve Austin) is an ex border patrol who lost his best friend/partner, Lee Davis (Eric Roberts), in a gunfight with drug dealers. He lives in peace now as the mountain/forest man who's got his food by hunting. Jim is currently tries to bond with her teenage daughter, Kim (Marie Avgeropoulos), who constantly nags for being far away from the city. Meanwhile a group of criminal led by a twisted man named Banks (Gil Bellows) is crossing path with Jim when they take Kim as hostage. Banks and his men force Jim to lead them through the mountain which they believe was also the trail of their back-stabbing friend. Jim initially tries to comply but one teenage girl among psychopathic men prove to be very hard for a father not to feel emotional. Will Jim lead them to find their guy? Will they survive the mountain terrain?

Hunt to Kill is predictable in every way possible, but that flaw is what also making me admire the writer and the actors. For something so cliché full of old tricks, they can still pull it off. The movie will stir your emotion with the drama and the action and the revenge elements. Steve Austin is one-dimensional yes, but he is not a miscast and probably due to the script. However, it is Adrian Holmes (as hot-headed Crab) and especially Gil Bellows who give the movie some degree of drama as without them playing as this annoying big a*sholes of a crook, Jim's effort to save his daughter and himself would be a downright uninteresting.

Hunt to Kill does share strong resemblance with Cliffhanger (1993), however it is still one entertaining action flick for a brainless weekend. Although Hunt to Kill doesn't take full use of altitude-phobia of the mountain ala Cliffhanger (1993), but some scenes will make some people experience sweaty feet and the fighting/brawling/action scenes are also considerably fast and rough. Hunt to Kill is definitely a lot better than Damage (2009) in terms of action and though it's not as loud as The Expendables (which also features Steve Austin, Eric Roberts and Gary Daniels) but Hunt to Kill seems genuinely try to amuse its audience unlike The Expendables which I personally think it's mainly produced to amuse its actors.
