I was hesitant at first to post this review, not because I dislike it but because I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't know squat of what this movie is about! And in Movielogy's each review, there is a synopsis of a movie, but I didn't know what to write! I was just gaping and scratching my head that even a pure black coffee didn't help me to dig the premise. Luckily, at 2nd viewing I eventually understand. *Sob sob..* . It's kinda like seeing The Matrix (1999) for the first time, which I visited the cinema again the following week just to understand it.
Interceptor or in its original title Zapreshchennaya realnost was based on the book titled Smersh XXI that was written by Vasiliy Golovachev who also wrote the screenplay for Interceptor.
Moscow 2013, the world is controlled by two forces, the Inner Circle and the darkness. A tough young man named Matvey (Igor Petrenko of Wolfhound (2007)) is betrayed by his former partner, Kurylo (Aleksandr Baluev) in order for Kurylo to take control of the ultimate weapon. Luckily Matvey survives the deadly betrayal and now lives peacefully in the countryside near Lake Baltik. However Kurylo's act of evil is getting out of hand by testing the weapon on civilians, thus forcing the government to persuade Matvey to finish Kurylo. Matvey is so skilled that he's even trusted by the elder of the Inner Circle, Infarkh (Valeriy Gur'ev) as their warrior because the elder also knows that Kurylo is the puppet of Konkere the master of darkness. In the same time a reporter, Kristina (Anna Khodyush) is noticing something bizarre about Kurylo and is being hunted by Kurylo's goons. Furthermore Matvey is not the only one who wants to take Kurylo down, a vigilante squad known as 'Stop Crime' led by Gorshin (Vladimir Vdovichenkov) is intensively fighting Kurylo's secret organization. Could Matvey accomplish his mission? How are these crime fighters fate will intertwine?
Whew... what a relief having finished that paragraph. Talking about horrible storytelling technique. And I won't give you more detailed storyline otherwise it'd be a spoiler. Anyhow, comparing The Matrix and Interceptor is interesting. The Matrix has the advantage because it was groundbreaking, a novelty, that probably made people overlook the confusing storyline and premise. The question, was The Matrix really a novelty? One thing for sure, exactly 20 years before The Matrix was released, there was already a Russian Sci-Fi movie called Mesto vstrechi izmenit nelzya (1979), which bore resemblances with The Matrix, and some Russian internet users on the net accuse The Matrix's filmmakers of plagiarism. But still for most moviegoers at that time, The Matrix was new. How about Interceptor then? Nothing new here. The overall atmosphere is like Bourne's trilogy movies, great action scenes with good martial arts fighting scenes and slow-motion ala The Matrix. Decent acting performances from all the cast and great camerawork, beautiful actresses (complete with nude scene) and splendid CGI. But unfortunately, if you don't grasp the storyline, it would be a bit hard for you fellow movie buffs to enjoy Interceptor in a whole.
But seriously, if you're willing not to care about the story, Interceptor would quite entertain you, the action scenes are fast, rough and tough. And the Sci-Fi elements blended well with the action. A rent is okay, at least you'll get a clearer sight of the story from the paragraphs above.
