Wonderful world of horror movies. In the hands of adept filmmakers any kind of creature can be scary, and any age of a person can be scary. Old people, teenagers, mature, senior, pre-teen, anyone can be transformed into a daunting being. And this time it's a Baby! Not that dancing baby that graces your laptop as screensaver, but bloody f*cked-up scary baby. And be warned though, this movie may not suitable for will-be mom. And honestly the remake is not recommended for some people either.
It's Alive is a remake of the 1974 movie by Larry Cohen. People shouldn't be surprised since the 70's horror cinema held all kind of weird creatures. A young couple Frank Davis (James Murray) and Lenore Harker (Bijou Phillips of Hostel: Part II (2007)) are waiting for their baby to come, so Lenore postpones her study and stays with Frank and his little brother, Chris (Raphaël Coleman) in a secluded house in the town of Larkspur, New Mexico. However, before the time comes as scheduled, Lenore is delivering her baby by means of Caesarean section operation in the County hospital. But... the baby who's already double in size is far from being an ordinary cuddly one, it's a scary baby craving for any kind of fresh meat, literally. So havoc is inevitable where he leaves bloody trails. Will his mama find out about this? And what's she gonna do about it?
Bijou, Bijou, and Bijou.., that's the only advantage for male demographic viewers will be getting from this miserably executed horror film. Her super hot appearance and her 'inner' beauty revelation was something that soothed my pain of spending money to see this remake. But she is also the one with the best acting capacity, you could at least feel emotion coming from her, her being tired, stressed out, confused, mentally breakdown, yes Bijou carries the movie all by herself. The other cast really needs improvement although the script and the dialogue doesn't help much either. Some scenes are creepy thanks to the eerie scenery at night but also beautiful at day light, but overall I felt so bored watching this film, there aren't much going on, and when it does happen, it really lacks the gusto of tension and it ends too fast. And finally in a seemingly desperate attempt to scare, you got to see the baby's face in a close-up shot, yes it's horrible and would give you only a slight boo scare at best.
All things considered, like I've mentioned above, this 2008 remake of Larry Cohen's movie is definitely not recommended for seasoned horror movie fans especially the fan of the original work. Although each respective movie has its own advantage and the remake is better in picturing more creative (and convincing) killing scenes. Unfortunately the CGI could not elevate the intensity to the level of many modern horror movies we've seen lately. It's doubtful you would be scared of the baby, you should be scared of feeling disappointed and losing your money by purchasing a copy of the movie, don't make the same mistake as I did, although I did it in the name of review.
