Ever since I was just a kid, Jules Verne with his "Journey to the Center of the Earth" always amazes me. This is one of the stories that always lingers in my mind. Back than, I was just fascinated by how creative his imagination was and though I had read numerous amounts of legends from many countries and ethnicities, still what's Mother Earth conceals and contains probably would continue to be a mystery. Many cartoons have pictured Jules Verne's story, but Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D brings a new level.
JttCotE is an adventure story about another world with exotic creatures and plants deep down beneath us or most popularly known as a world within our world. Brendan Fraser roles as Trevor Anderson a volcanologist who is halfheartedly accepted his sister-in-law request to spend ten days with his 13-year-old nephew Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson). Sean's mom gives Trevor what is left of his late husband or Trevor's brother Max Anderson. Looking through the stuff, Trevor gets a hold of a book written by Jules Verne. Trevor decides to go find another volcanologist living in Iceland along with Sean who is now less hostile to his uncle. In Iceland, they meet the daughter of a volcanologist named Hanna (Anita Briem) who offers to guide Trevor and Sean to Stag Mountain. Alas, Trevor, Hanna and Sean are trapped in a cave and forced to find another way out through an abandoned mineshaft. But their escape route brings them to anything that they could have ever dreamed of, a whole another world.
Alright, so we got to see many fascinated creatures, and also got to see what "Fish Baseball" and "Plant Punching" are with the comical Brendan Fraser. Plus, thrilling rides of action such as on the mineshaft, in the cave, on the ocean, and the volcano. And although the creatures may have looked moth-eaten, not the CGI but the figures, and creatures in Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy 2:The Golden Army seem more creative, but perhaps this is what JttCotE needs to stick to the original storyline.
Brendan Fraser is the right actor to play Trevor, recalling he's great in The Mummy franchise and George of the Jungle, the combination of fantasy, action and comedy really fits him. And casting Anita Briem, a real Icelandic actress to play Hanna I guess it's the right choice, though she seems a bit uptight for this children-oriented film. Josh Hutcherson seems a uptight too. They should have appeared friendlier and a bit wackier if not to say happier.
Nevertheless, I did enjoy watching JttCotE especially since the theater is dark, comfy and choked full of Parents with kids, so it kinda give me the illusion of being in a Disneyland or Fantasy Land. This fantasy movie is sure is fun but by the end of the movie, I just felt that the creatures and the surroundings are just not odd enough to make it really memorable.
