The Movie Review

Anywhere Anytime Instantly...This ability absolutely defeats mankind's dream of flying. No matter whether you're old or young, live in the big city or in the rural area, the ability to go anywhere instantly is a drooling dream. This is the premise of the movie Jumper.

It tells a story of a young boy named David Rice (Hayden Christensen) who accidentally finds out that he could leap through distance when he's about to face death. David is a teenage who is unhappy with his family life, and is not successful with his crush Rachel Bilson (Millie Harris). David needs some money to get out of his father's house, so he jumps (teleports) to a bank's vault, steals the money and leaves a note that says

"I'll pay it later". He then moves to New York City and lives in a luxurious apartment but still continues to rob banks and jumps to every place he desires up until he's an adult.

His comfortable life is about to be ruined when one day his apartment is visited by a strange guest who knows everything about David's teleporting ability and says that he's been tracking David since the first bank robbing committed by David. That Guest is Roland Cox (Samuel L. Jackson) that turns out to be a Paladin, a guy who regulates the law for the Jumpers and kills them.

One of the characters that I like from X-Men is Nightcrawler! Not because of his personality, but for his teleporting ability. What I'm really saying is that Nightcrawler cool-level is heighten because he fights and beats the sh*t out of everyone, while David is almost doing nothing other than jumping, much like a super tour guide for me. There a scene where David and his friend are driving through the busy roads of Japan and a cool scene when David's friend Griffin hit Roland through the wall, well those are cool and all, but they're not long enough to linger in mind.

I was really hoping that someday there would be a movie about Nightcrawler or about someone who has his ability. He would fights, runs and every cool action moves. Jumper is a good movie, but it confused itself with drama, action or just plain sci-fi. David Rice has a similar character to Peter Parker (Spiderman), and Peter's ability is even lower than David, David should have a movie like what Spiderman has.

Hayden fits the character nicely, but Millie Harris is just not convincing enough. And from all the cast, even Samuel himself looks as if he is confused by the Jumper concept itself. So really, the entire cast's acting is not a memorable one.

Jumper with its all sci-fi imagination is really a tour around the world while being chased by some hunters, only David is not taking a plane. But I do give it applause for giving us the audience to see the Colosseum of Rome. For your information, the Colosseum of Rome is strictly forbidden to be shot by cameras, moreover videotaped or filmed.

So, all things considered, Jumper is just a new born sci-fi flick that doesn’t jump high enough to be monumental. This film would be fun enough to watch, but just what like I said before, it doesn't linger.
