A young man, Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), is moving to London to work as professional Tennis instructor. He might've been a famous Tennis player if he'd wanted to but due to his resentment to world Tennis tour, he opts to just settle down in a modest apartment that cost him 225 quid a week and living his daily life in peace.
And then a man of his age, Tom Hewett (Matthew Goode of Chasing Liberty (2004) and Watchmen (2009)), enrolls as Chris' pupil. And apparently Chris' sophisticated taste in Opera leads them to be close friends. It's a great chance to be even more successful man for Chris since Tom is coming from a very wealthy (but nice and friendly) family who seems to like him very much. And to top that luck, Tom's innocent sister, Chloe (Emily Mortimer), has a major crush on him. And she makes an effort for Chris to have a decent position in her father's huge company.
Chris, who's anything but an opportunist, consider all this just luck and simply goes with the flow. But his unexpected meeting with Tom's fiancee, Nola (Scarlett Johansson), stirs up the good stuff he alredy has. Nola, an American struggling actress coming from Colorado, is a spirited blonde woman who's having a hard time herself to be welcomed by her future family. When Chris is getting even more intimate to Chloe and everyone in the family has welcomed him, will he able to restrain his feeling to Nola?
Match Point is a 2-hour long drama movie for the adults. It received a nomination in the Academy Award 2006 for Best Original Screenplay. For me personally and I'm sure also for other viewers, viewing this tye of film require certain conditios to be fulfilled. I would've watched this inside a movie theatre on a rainy day or seen it alone in my viewing room. This ain't a movie to watch with your family, or buddies and even not with your spouse.
Match Point doesn't require us to put our thinking cap, really no. And there isn't any disturbing moments, although it does at one point crosses the thriller threshold. But anyhow, it still would be much more appealing if you see it alone. And I really consider the targeted demographic viewers are the grown-ups or for those who understand the struggle in life in earning some cash and probably have also experienced the dilema that Chris is experiencing.
If I were still in Junior high school or even in senior, I would've stormed out of the cinema after 30 minutes of viewing! (Unless the popcorn was nice :-) or I could've just drooled my way to sleep) But in my age now I could enjoy this movie. It is a fact that Match Point delivers a great deal in dialogue fencing among the charactes, but I really see that as an important matter to make the audience emotionally-attached to them. Slowly but surely the audience will grow their concern over certain character and that is where we are hooked to the story.
Match Point is a very good motion picture. The performance of the cast is great, the editing is nice and it offers moral message for us. It's just that this movie somehow more segmented (in entertainment term) than other drama films.
