Oh The Asylum... you just can't let any big movie slip can you? Dear readers who come into this page wondering what the heck Mega Piranha is all about, likely will not know what The Asylum is. Well my friends, let's play fill the blank!

Along with Snakes on a Plane (2006), there was Snakes on a Train (2006)
Along with Primeval (2007), there was Super Croc (2007)
And so along with Piranha 3D (2010), there is......... Mega Piranha!!!

The Asylum is the company behind all those rip-offs, but you won't see those motion pictures in movie theater since most of The Asylum productions are direct-to-videos. And Mega Piranha itself was premiered on SyFy Channel. But surprisingly, Mega Piranha is actually one of the good batches of the rip-offs.

The movie is set in Venezuela. The US secretary of state, Bob Grady (Barry Williams of Brady Bunch), is calling one of his most trusted special forces, Jason Fitch (Paul Logan; MegaFault (2009)) to investigate the mysterious deaths of a US ambassador (Eric Forsberg, the Director himself) and a Venezuelan foreign minister. These two middle-aged men were killed by a school of large piranhas while vacationing on a speed boat with hot Venezuelan ladies (cue topless chicks). But Venezuelan top rank military personel, Colonel Antonio Diaz (David Labiosa), claims it was done by terrorists. Colonel Diaz seemingly has his own agenda about the current politic with USA. Jason Fitch then gets to know Sarah Monroe (Tiffany), one of three American scientists working in Venezuela who are responsible for creating those genetically altered Piranhas. They were doing it for a good cause but it backfires horribly. Because now the Piranha has at least half a dozen new organs, two hearts, triple thick skin, and a hermaphrodite which means each of them could breed on its own.

Luckily the Piranhas were held in a natural dam separating them from the rest of the river. But the dam will not hold them for long because these brutal creatures are doubling in size every 24 hours. Now Jason Fitch, Sarah Monroe, and two other scientists have to race against time and also against colonel Diaz who's trying to fail Jason Fitch's effort without realizing the deadly consequences. What is going to happen in Venezuela?

Straightforwardly speaking, Mega Piranha will not appeal to anyone who's adult enough and is not used to seeing b-movies. They would directly label this as the worst movie ever. The truth is, this is far from being "Worst movie ever", because Mega Piranha has got something that could make the audience at least can stand to see the movie till the end. A thing that most of The Asylum movies don't have... Fast-Pacing. Okay maybe even sometimes it's too fast alias rushed! But at least I was happy enough not to feel bored watching this animal gone wild film. But then again the movie suffers from many flaws, but most strikingly is the acting... Only Paul Logan who gives okay performance.

And Tiffany of Tiffany... I remember clearly how I used to hear your song on the radio before going to school. Or when I was rejected by one of the girls... hahaha (laughter in desperation :-)). Anyhow... You have a very good, sexy and unique kind of voice, something that people will instantly know that it's your voice. "If Love is Blind" is the name of your very-popular song. I'm one of your fans as a singer, but I'm definitely not your fan when you act. Whow... I don't know what motive did you have to play in this movie, but clearly you need to attend more acting classes I guess. But Tiffany's over-the-top performance is not the only flaw in Mega Piranha's acting department. Clearly everyone in this movie is either acting too much or too wooden. But I guess, the script is a major flaw either, lackluster and too ordinary. Most B-movies could survive by throwing some funny one-liners, but comedy is absent here. And our viewing enjoyment is ruined heavily by the lame fake CGI piranha.

Nevertheless it's really hard to think of Mega Piranha seriously, c'mon man... Giant Piranhas flying to wreck some buildings? And our hero, Jason Fitch, is kicking the oncoming Piranhas like it was a circus show? And to top it all, the ending? I'm sure I could give much higher rating if the ending is responsible, but it's awful truly awful, and highly illogical. In the end mate, you're gonna be saying WTF in laughter or WTF in anger or simply "Yeah...it's Asylum, what else?"
