The Asylum Company... Whenever there is a hit movie then there's a rip-off movie. For instance: Snakes on a Plane (2006) with Snakes on a Train; I am Legend (2007) with I am Omega; 10,000 BC (2008) with 100 Million BC. That's what The Asylum usually did, mimicking the story of a famous movie, and giving their movie similar title. So what did Megafault rip off? Frankly I could only give wild guess, but even then I didn't find any volcano-themed movie with the same name as Megafault. So is Megafault a brand new fantastic movie? Not really, on the contrary actually. The real reason why I view this it was because...
Brittany Murphy of course!! That's the main reason why I post this review of Megafault. For the last couple of days, I've been reviewing several disaster movies. And after the mega-cool of mega-tsunami film, Haeundae, yesterday, I was gonna post another water-related disaster, but then I think I should somehow pay tribute first to the late Brittany Murphy who has passed away in December 20th 2009 in her young age of only 32. Whatever Megafault would turn up to be, good or bad, it's still worth mentioning for this is one of Brittany's last movies...
The story starts when a group of workers blasting some parts of Black River Mountain in West Virginia, which related or not, but at the same time a major earthquake is tearing the whole area down causing major destruction. Dr. Amy Lane (Brittany Murphy) says that the earthquake would go on to rupture indefinitely and tear across the whole of United States. What follow are destruction along its path with earthquake aftershocks and power losses all around the Midwest. Dr. Lane is on hands to prevent further damage and death toll. But her mind is split between saving people's lives and the life of her own husband and daughter who are currently flying blind because the Indianapolis air tower has been destroyed. Lucky for Dr. Lane, one survivor of Black River mountain earthquake, Boomer (Eriq La Salle) is determined to help Dr. Lane for saving his life and will accompany her along the way. It's not going to be easy for them, since this earthquake is heading to Yosemite National Park, the home of a super volcano. And now, with the help of the government officials can these two friends prevent further disaster?
Commenting about the acting quality of the cast in Megafault is not something exciting. Because they weren't acting so good in this movie. They're not wooden like plank, but you can feel they were lacking the motivation and spirit needed for a disaster movie. Plus the child actor, really need more acting class. But despite all of that, I do like the friend-chemistry between Eriq La Salle and Brittany Murphy. She may not be very suitable as a scientist but at least Brittany and Eriq delivered the best performances in this made-for-tv disaster film.
The Asylum is also pretty famous/notorious for its low-budget visual effects. And of course this fact made the fire, the ground-cracking, the ice-beam and all the disaster-effects look downright fake. But realizing this particular coincidence, I pop in Megafault with modest expectation (even low perhaps), besides, I really just wanted to see how Brittany performed in a movie which was released just shortly before her death. So fellow moviegoers out there who wish to find a movie as good as Dante's Peak or at least as foolish-but-fun as Volcano might want to stay clear away from Megafault.
