If I were on Family Feud TV show and there's a question that asks 'What's the most scariest but useful thing in life?' Oh I know what I'm gonna answer... it's the freakish Scarecrow! Notoriously employed in many horror movies, Scarecrow is a monster figure on its own way. You need it but you fear it, if you have seen the real one, especially at night while hiking perhaps? (plenty area of that in the mountain range in Java Island), it would bring up at least a slight feeling of uneasiness in seeing them. And this Mr. Scarecrow is ready to scare the horror fans in this direct-to-video sequel of the 2007 movie, The Messengers. Interesting to note, that as of this review being written and published, this movie is being played on several movie theaters in Indonesia. Now the question is, is it worthy? Could it scare you..?
John Rollins (Norman Reedus) is a humble farmer who's really having a hard time in his life with his crop is failing because all the crows plucking his corn making his cornfield useless. Poor and debt-ridden, the confused John suddenly finds a hidden room in his barn where he finds the creepy looking scarecrow. And when he puts it in the middle of the cornfield, his problems are solved one by one. But not in a subtle way, the problem vanishes in deadly ways. Furthermore, the John's family is start to falling apart, his wife, Mary (Heather Stephens) doesn't trust him anymore, his daughter (Claire Holt) loses respect on him and his son (Laurence Belcher) is mad at him. But John's confusion always seems to be solved by the advice of his mysterious neighbour, Jude Weatherby (Richard Riehle). What is this Scarecrow really? Is John really losing his mind?
You know that's a bad sign of quality when renting or buying a movie that's a sequel and also a DTV movie. But...but...but... it's freakin' true! At least this time! Not from the horror aspect but from one thing that tie those element, the storyline. Such a distant family (it seems John Rollins is the only member of the family) with highly unsympathetic and untrusting wife, and had the unashamed guts to accuse the husband for killing people while they have been married for 16 years? Talking about forced storyline. Mr. Scarecrow, how about I'm paying you 1 G to whack them all? Hiks... what a bummer night I had viewing this atrocious horror flick. Seriously guys, the drama in this movie makes me sick of all the characters, most of them are cardboard clichés as wooden as the corns in that field, and when we do have a good actress (Heather Stephens), she's got the most unsympathetic character. The purpose of bad characters in this horror film is to depict human's prejudice against one another, but the way this sequel presenting us is annoying instead of thrilling as in the first movie.
Consisting almost everything of boo scares, this horror film plays between regular thriller and supernatural horror. Fans of The Shining (1980) would be familiar with what this movie presenting us. From the thriller side, it's quite good, the performance fits the bill, and from the supernatural side the little girl is kinda creepy. But the second half of the movie or more precisely near the end, Messengers 2: The Scarecrow becomes something obscure, a monster movie! WTF?! Yeah dude, that horror figure in this movie really looks like the type of villain that Spider-man used to whack when not dating Kirsten Dunst. What I'm saying is, the horror becomes almost zero as well as the tension, but the action is still acceptable.
-- Start of Spoiler Possibility Alert --
Oh yeah, something else builds this horror film, mystery. Messengers 2: The Scarecrow is said to be a prequel to The Messengers (2007). Now that's a mystery of itself, what prequel? This movie ends happily ala Hollywood, with every member of the Rollins survives the ordeal. Now that's mystery of its own alright...
-- End of Spoiler Possibility Alert --
But aside from all of that, for some reasons probably Messengers 2: The Scarecrow is not an entirely bad entertainment, it's just a few bar below mediocrity, it's still amusing for undemanding general moviebuffs, and with Darcy Fowers' (as Jude Weatherby's wife) freshen ups in the cornfield topless and sex scene with Norman Reedus, I think Messengers 2: The Scarecrow has already its own definite market. But to see it on cinema? I really don't suggest it.
