Valentine arguably has never been this bloody since February 13th 1981 where the colour of Red in Valentine's Day meant blood instead of love. It was also the time where figuratively cute icon figure of 'heart' became horrifying when it translated into literal, which means a real heart ripped out from a corpse. Yeah, the early 80s is that bloody and at the dawn of 2009, John Dunning & André Link (the producers of the original My Bloody Valentine), tried to contribute to the world of remakes by releasing My Bloody Valentine 3D. A remake of the 1981 Canadian slasher My Bloody Valentine and is also the first 3-Dimensional movie ever that's condemned with an R rating by the MPAA. Condemned? Not! For horror movie fans, it's a gift! Why? Let's find out.
The serenity and peaceful of a mining town of Harmony is about to known as the murder capital of America. On one unfortunate day, several miners are trapped when an explosion occurs and buried them alive, leaving only 1 survivor named Harry Warden who survives by killing the other miners to conserve the air. It's later known the explosion was an accident happened because of the carelessness of Tom Hanniger (Jensen Ackles from Supernatural), the son of the Mine's owner. Harry Warden (Richard John Walters), who is currently lying in a state of Comma in Harmony Memorial Hospital, wakes up in a delusional state and goes on a killing spree and is eventually able to reach to the mine where several teenagers are having a party. It's a regular teen party which includes Axel Palmer (Kerr Smith from Final Destination (2000), Dawson's Creek) and his girlfriend Irene (Betsy Rue), Sarah (Jaime King from Sin City (2005), The Spirit (2008)) and his boyfriend, Tom, who seems reluctant to go back to the scene. Not long afterwards Harry Warden shows up and starts to offing the teens one by one leaving Tom and those three teens as survivors when we eventually see him escaping the gunshots of then-Sheriff Burke (Tom Atkins from Creepshow (1982), The Fog (1980) and Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)). 10 long years later, the peace is seemingly back in Harmony and Tom is coming back to take care of some papers. But shortly, murder after murder begins to happen. Does Harry Warden come back to settle a score?
Having this horror film in 3D could mean a good or bad decision. The good thing is that it employs some shock values that comply with 3D advantage, which means some of the gore and the violence feel like they're about to coming at you, pop out of the screen and smack your face with blood, pickaxe or even a branch, among other things. I'll say it's clever for using that modern tech to please the shocking-seeking audience. But it's definitely different with what common slasher fans were expecting for, but hey a little bit of change won't hurt.
About this slasher movie, well it's not at all cheap-like, being a less popular slasher film compared to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween or Friday the 13th, this movie has the advantage of using red herring and suspense. You would think that "He/she's the killer!", but... who knows? If you see Halloween or that other movies, all you expecting for is the nude scenes and the creative killing methods. But no mystery or suspense could be added to the movies, it's just like "hey! It's Michael Myers (Halloween)" or "hey! It's Leatherface (TCM)", but in My Bloody Valentine 3D, "hey! WhoTF is that?!" Well, and so to add to this good side, I've got one more "hey" for fellow moviegoers, "Hey! What's that nude chick doing at the motel parking lot running around like that?" That's right folks, when it comes to the cheesy time, it's so cheesy, and when it comes to the shock times, it's shocking. But... it's gooood. Betsy Rue oh Betsy Rue, it's so generous of you to treat the male audience's eyes with... say um... almost 7 minutes long of full frontal nudity and sex scene! I'm guessing most of the audience would be keeping tab on your next movies.
Nevertheless, this horror film is also generating flaws, which is no other than being a remake itself. Must've been stirred up bad prejudice among horror fans. But what's not being a prejudice is the story itself. It's bad... Well, not all of them. However, it's bad on one of the most important parts of the movie, the beginning. The deal is this, if you enter the cinema a bit late and miss the short introduction of what has happened in Harmony, it's 99% positive that you would not get the idea behind the killings. And it's actually even worse (for me), my seat became noisy since I had to explain to my friends demanding explanation for what happens in the original movie, because my buds there didn't feel the thrill even after seeing the flashy flashbacks of what driving Harry Warden to go on a killing spree. However, I like the scene of the clothes dryer killing scene, I think it's one of the most memorable things from the original My Bloody Valentine.
In the end, and to compare to mostly other remakes before, this one is relatively cheaper, cheesy, tacky, but as it should be... It's f*ckin' FUN! One thing for sure, slasher fans who knows what they're hoping for would be delighted with the content, on-screen graphical murders, lotsa gore and especially those of you who also admire exploitation flick, again, with long T&A scene. So if you "axe" me whether you should watch it, then I'll say this one is really worth a "pick". Happy Halloween Guys!
