Neowolf is --for the figuratively thousand times-- about werewolf, a freakin' scary savage animal-slash-human which supposed to scare the living moonlight out of anyone. But Neowolf plays this howling creature for laughs. Intentionally or not, it's hard to feel afraid of this silly Indie horror.
A big part of the driving concept is "We know there are already tons of werewolf movie, but we make another anyway, and oh don't worry it's your standard lovable B-movie" and for that matter, Neowolf is acceptable and fans of trashy horror might be intrigued to fork over some of their greenbacks to see Neowolf.
How should the audience be afraid anyway to a creature which has furs not like of the animal/wolf but of carpet factory reject! Yippi yep yep, in a small town, a rock band is coming to spice things up and is auditioning for a new member. Here comes Tony (Michael Frascino), an aspiring rocker who had failed to reach his dreams because he's too caught up in thinking about his girlfriend, Rosemary (Heidi Johanningmeier). Once he gets on stage singing in a very country tone with his acoustic guitar, the band falls in love with him. Vince (Agim Kaba) the singer and his band are ready to take him in and especially the lustful Paula (Megan Pepin).
Little does Tony know that this band is coming all the way from Romania with a string of killings mysteriously always follow them wherever they go. Who is this rock band actually? What will become of Tony and Rosemary?
Tiffany Shepis of Nightmare Man (2006) and Dark Reel (2008) is back again-and-again-in-b-movies but this time she's clearly underused. A FAQ page from IMDb intrigued me for actually the Screen Actors Guild would sue Neowolf producers for putting a nude unknown supporting actress posing as is she's Heidi Johanningmeier. But it's good to see Veronica Cartwright to add leverage in acting department playing as Mrs. Belakov as Botanist and expert in Wolfsbane/Aconitum the so-called Anti-Werewolf plant.
Not many people will give this movie a spin as long as the potential viewers could still lay their hands on titles like The Wolfman (2010) or Underworld Quadrology (2003, 2004, 2006, 2012), but I did have some good time seeing Neowolf. I didn't feel bored because the filmmakers are not trying too seriously so it somehow becomes like a spoof, although I did gulp a cup of extra strong espresso. The performance of the cast are quite well actually, they seem natural but the editing does need some upgrade besides 70 minutes would be just enough! The story runs too long on the live-stage-band-performance scenes that Neowolf almost feels like some sort of advertising for those bands performing in Neowolf. Nevertheless, viewers still could have stupid fun with this "funny" horror flick if you don't mind the obvious cheesiness.
