John (Kristoffer Joner) is a man with a broken heart. He loves his girlfriend, Ingrid, oh so much but only to be let down when she's dating someone else. Ingrid (Anna Bache-Wiig) deliberately goes to John's apartment just to take her stuff back while her new boyfriend, Åke (Michael Nyqvist), is waiting outside worrying that John might hurt her. Shocked and insulted of Ingrid's uncalled-for precaution, John descends deeper into depression until he encounters enigmatic female neighbor, Anne, living right next door to him. Anne (Cecilie A. Mosli) introduces herself flirtatiously and what an attractive woman she is, but her figure and behavior is none compared to Anne's even more mysterious sister, Kim (Julia Schacht).
John's attention and sadness are distracted by the puzzling fact that Anne and Kim know a great deal of his life and relationship with Ingrid. And through their actions, John is getting involved in sick sex story and sex games which played by Kim. When he's getting deeper in a seemingly bad ending, John may never have the chance to take it all back.
Produced with a budget not more than US $3 million, Next Door is a splendid psychological thriller which will trick casual moviegoers who rarely see this type of film. So, actually, for seasoned moviegoers, you can guess what the twist ending will be like. But it's unfair to label this movie as predictable or bad, because there are so many things about this movie that's pulled off brilliantly. For starter, it runs only a bit more than 70 minutes which I say as perfect time! The story doesn't drag and it isn't rushed, there are no useless padding to achieve the usual 90-minutes, so practically every scene counts to the progress of the story. The acting is undoubtedly great! Kristoffer Joner is just brilliant! His portrayal as this depressed man with all the facial expressions is top-notch!
In this world of Next Door where something may not seems as what it is, there is also a very unusually violent sex scene performed by Kristoffer Joner and Julia Schacht --who's labeled as "2005 Norway's most sexy woman--. This particular scene may need your precaution as it's a blatant hate-it-or-love-it category. But frankly guys, aside of that rather masochistic-related-material sex scene which likely be a major turn off, Julia Schacht has given a truly remarkable performance which is gonna be very hard to beat by other actresses! Her body language, words articulation and facial expressions teamed up with Kristoffer Joner's alone is already something must-watch material! Then, enhanced with good camerawork that captures the moment and neat editing makes this Norwegian thriller worth watching. Next Door AKA Naboer is for moviegoer who wants to watch it alone as it's not a popcorn entertainment but an achievement in storytelling and acting...
