By one of prominent cinema chains in Indonesia, Night of the Demons was promised to be screened/showed/played in Jakarta around the 3rd week of May. But up until today, May 27, we haven't seen it anywhere. Well, I thought I just give this a review, so if it does come up, you can consider whether to see this or not. Besides, I really want to know, would there be any sensor to all the nudity the movie delivers?
A large number of dumb boys and gals are flocking an old creepy 150-year old ghost house to celebrate Halloween. Among them are three BFFs (best friends forever, doh!): Lily (Diora Baird of My Best Friend's Girl (2008); The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)), Maddi (Monica Keena) and Suzanne (Bobbi Sue Luther). The party is thrown by Angela (Shannon Elizabeth) who makes a profit by charging them stupid kids a door fee. But suddenly the police come and officially makes themselves the legitimate party poopers of October 31st. Everyone is thrown away from the house but a total of 7 people are left behind because of personal reasons, including Angela. And in the midst of chaos, these 7 boys and girls find a secret door that leads to a room full of lying skeletons.
Apparently, the ghost house story is might just be the real dreaded deal of the night. Strange thing starts to happen to one of them. And she's trying to infect that "evil stuff" to the others. Who's got infected? And what is happening in that house?
Low budget, trashy, cheesy and brainless B-movie. Those words sum up the whole quality of Night of the Demons. This is a remake of the 1988 movie with the same name. The remake is crammed with the regular faces of B movie cinema. But there is Linnea Quigley this time, and it's nice to see her again, she was the original cast of the original. Mainstream moviegoers may not know these actors, let alone familiar with them. But fans of B-movie would feel right at home.
We got all things regular to a low-budget horror flick. Naked women, striptease, debauchery, unconvincing sex scenes and lotsa gore. But not everything important to a moviemaking had been marginalized. The acting is good, I'm not surprised, though I'm glad :-) and the editing is good as well as the pacing. The camerawork could capture the tension, although sometimes over the top. It's just that the movie is very nasty in the gore side, typical of Adam Gierasch's works. Shock values of disturbing sights are his trademarks, and it's definitely not for the squeamish ones.
For my fellow Jakartans, if you have recently watched Infestation (2009) (it's still playing now though), and you liked that movie, then maybe you'll find something amusing out of Night of the Demons (2009). This horror is not pure horror, it's a hybrid of horror and comedy. Is it funny? Maybe, but only induce chuckling for twice or thrice, the comedy is onion-skin thin. The humor is only enough to evade the movie from being pure horror. Is it scary? The creatures are scary and the opening scene which is dominated with boo scares are quite powerful. So it's important to note, that if you don't like monsters or monster face or hate the guts out of boo scares and disturbed by the gore, you're definitely do not want to watch this.
Would general film fans want to watch this horror film in cinemas? Likely no, and I wouldn't suggest it if you have other options available. And I really don't think it's a good ice breaker for a first date. The impression afterwards is not feel-good memorable. But horror buffs might want to give this a rent. A cheap rent that is. Besides, this movie was finally released as a direct-to-video anyway.
