'There is no Planet B!' 'Save the Humans!' 'Change the politics, not the climate!'
I actually borrowed those words from the banners held high by protesters in the World Climate protest in copenhagen, a protest over climate changes and how to deal with it. On Saturday Dec 12th 2009, as many as 25,000 to 100,000 people from all around the world filled the streets and walked toward Bella Centre where the UN climate conference is being held. Mainly, it's about global warming, which its very existence is also a subject to debate. But let's not get into that, the thing is, Global Warming spawned many disaster movies. And it's your choice whether to see the movie or not, and my job is to inform you what's good and what's not. And in 2008, Sci-Fi Channel released this made-for-TV movie, NYC: Tornado Terror.
So, is it a Disaster movie or a 'disaster' movie? Let's find out.
Deputy Mayor Jim Lawrence (Sebastian Spence) and his meteorologist wife Cassie (Nicole de Boer) are enjoying a regular peaceful day by having a picnic. Even Cassie's relative, Lori (Tegan Moss) is getting an instant date with her new friend, a sympathetic fireman, Brian (Colby Johannson). But suddenly the kids in the park are chasing something twirling around the park of what appear to be three baby tornados. Cassie is getting anxious to see the situation only to be proven that the baby tornados are forming into a big one that eventually kills one visitor on that very same park and tears Lady Liberty out of her torch. It turns out that small incident is just the beginning of a super tornado created by super storm that is currently forming and is ready to strike New York City with its full devastating power. Cassie and James have to think extra hard to calm this nature's rage, a matter worsened by the stubbornness of the Mayor Leonardo (Jerry Wasserman). What will happen to NYC? Will the Tornado sacks this very famous city?
The title says NYC: Tornado Terror. Why New York City? Does every disaster need to happen in this city? So I did a little research, and it turns out that in 2007, a humongous tornado did strike New York City and of course Brooklyn. A Tornado that is said to be the biggest tornado ever to hit New York. So I guess probably this little movie here tries to depict that disaster. NYC: Tornado Terror is a movie made for TV, so to view this, I suppose you don't have to go to the cinema or but the DVD, you might just catch it on TV. But should you catch it or even hunt it? Does this movie really that good? It's a rhetorical question, because the answer is... No, this movie is stupid. I'm not a scientist, but some scenes are quite weird. Anyhow, I don't mind the weirdness, as long as there is enough drama and action going on. Sadly there's not, it's basically a bunch of scientists walking here and there panicking and explaining stuff. The acting and CGI are still acceptable, in fact nothing is extremely awful in this movie, the weird fireball scene and electrocuted emergency exit scene are good enough. Good enough if you're busy munching chips on your couch that is.
NYC: Tornado Terror is just humble enough just to be aired on TV, it doesn't try to compete with other disaster movies with enormous budget, it's a regular TV movie with little intensity going on. You have to be an extremely persistence die-hard fan of Sci-Fi Channel to truly enjoy this or if this is your first exposure to a disaster flick. All in all, NYC: Tornado Terror is not a total 'disaster' kind of movie, but I still advice you not to search or hunt for this movie.
