Paranormal Activity was a very laudable movie coming from Hollywood and I had a very high expectations for this supernatural horror film to make me feel thrilled, scared and kept me on the edge of my seat. As some of Indonesians would already notice, many Hollywood movies with a type of film pertaining ghastly encounter with ghosts might not be as awesome as they're supposed to be because of many factors... One of them is because local TV Stations have been airing supernatural reality show similarly daunting to Hollywood movies concerning exploring haunted buildings in old cities in Indonesia. What sets Hollywood movie apart from Indonesian or other South East Asian horror films, is probably the wrapping... That means solid filmmaking from Hollywood filmmakers in every facet!

Paramount Picture thanks Micah and Katie for all their recordings of the supernatural phenomena that had happened to them. That's what the opening says. What we are going to follow is based on the found footage of Micah Sloat and Katie Featherston. Micah and Katie are lovers who live in the same house belongs to Micah. Micah is working as day trader while Katie is still a student. Katie has been experiencing frightening phenomena in her life since childhood, she's seemingly being constantly followed by a supernatural entity which is unclear of its intention.

Determined to know the reason and the look of the entity, Micah is getting himself a big hand held camera complete with the blinding light. And by also being a tech savvy, Micah rigs his house with many ghost detecting devices. However it seems his plans is going to backfire with even more dangerous activities of the evil entity. What will happen to this poor couple?

The Blair Witch Project is a title from the past decade that I always remember fondly for giving something different. When we're talking about found footage, it's hard for memories not to fly back to aforementioned horror film or Cannibal Holocaust (1980) or Rec (2007). Fear just like humor, I guess will not be perceived on the same level by viewers. Some laugh, some appalled, and in any horror movie, some might get thrilled and haunted by the images but some might just scoff at it. For this reviewer personally, Paranormal Activity is actually rather boring and cumbersome. But if you believe in ghosts, there's a huge chance that you'll get goosebumps and experience faster heart beat seeing this film. I believe in ghosts/supernatural elements, but probably for me and for other Indonesians, there are many horror spots that we could get easily bump into and far more scarier than this horror film. Besides, it is overly overrated.

*> Found Footage is for example: you shot yourself singing in your room, you bring the tape but you lost it somewhere, and then someone find it and publish it for the world *<

But to get the fully effect of Paranormal Activity, it is best if you haven't seen any found footage film, that way you'll be having a hard time sleeping at night. The terror that Paranormal Activity is trying to deliver is practically scarier than other horror movies because it invades your home and your room and even without you noticing it. But like I said before, taste does vary. But I still like The Blair Witch Project (1999) better, at least they tried hard to articulate the story and even went to the woods. Unlike Paranormal Activity which only circles around the house.
