The Movie Review

Every Epic movie incorporates history lesson for us as the audience, through them we can learn much about the history that helped to shape the civilization of mankind.

Pathfinder is a unique one, it tells of a legend that many people find it just a mere fake story. Aside whether it's true or fake, it gives us a new taste of history. Because I'm pretty sure most of Epic Movie fans have already seen other epic movies that "Inspired by", "based on", and remakes from remakes, such is the case with The 13th warrior (1999), Beowulf & Grendel (2005) and Beowulf (2007).

In year around 1000, centuries before Columbus set foot in America, North America is invaded by vicious tribe, the Vikings. Luck is not on their side, while their ship eventually shipwrecks and left no survivors except for a young boy. A native Indian woman follows a white horse that brings her to the ship, she then finds the boy, adopts him, and raises him among the Indians. Ghost--is the new name of the boy--has grown to be a strong Indian warrior. One day when Ghost and the other Indian men are on a hunt, a new wave of terror sweep in, the Viking warriors are back. They slaughter every Indian on the village, Ghost manages to escape them. He is saved and cured by the Indians from another village lead by the Pathfinder. Having fully recovered, Ghost set out to stop this Marauder that he's once belong to.

Pathfinder brings new fresh air of realistic combat, after all the exhilaration of magic and alike, Ghost fight the Vikings without any supernatural power, he's doing it with the old school (well, ancient school) way. This film is pure action, only action and nothing but action, Ghost runs, jumps, uses his sword, tactics and his knowledge of the American landscape to outsmart the Vikings.

I know that there are some slip-ups in Pathfinder, but I personally do not mind it that much, I watch the film to get entertained, and not to do some research. But if I could give some advice, the huge body size of the Vikings make it look like a fantasy, and Ghost is just to darn skinny, if only they are not that different, all the action would feel more realistic. The Vikings are using their mother-tongue, that's good. But weird enough, the Indians are using English, a condition where fact meets creativity in an unpleasant condition.

There's so little moment of romance and drama in Pathfinder. This could be a downside or an upside, the downside is we as the audience will not be that empathetic to Ghost and the Indian. But the upside is, if you don't mind the lack of drama, than you will be highly entertained by its non-stop action.
