The Movie Review

I always curious about movies with very long title. The title alone would make me think that those movies might have many things to convey. As with Percy Jackson & The Lighning Thief, or more precisely Percy Jackson & the Olympians and the Lightning Thief. Besides the cinema that I went to were currently playing 3 ‘winged’ films, Tooth Fairy, Legion and this movie. Tooth Fairy was a bummer, so Percy Jackson was the right cure for the disappointment.

Percy Jackson is based on a novel entitled ‘The Lightning Thief’, written by Rick Riordian. The movie centers on, well, Percy Jackson. He’s a normal teenager. Percy (Logan Lerman) lives with his mom and filthy stinkin' stepfather. When going to a museum with his classmates including his wise-cracking

best friend, Grover (Brandon T. Jackson), Percy is taken by a teacher to an empty room and is unexpectedly accused for stealing 'The Lightning Thief'. And not just that, the teacher also suddenly turns into a nasty looking human bird (Harpies) and threatens to kill him. While being bewildered and shocked over the harsh up-in-the-air interrogation, Grover and a professor named Brunnen (Pierce Brosnan) saves Percy in the nick of time.

It's revealed that Percy is actually a demigod, which in Greek mythology means half-human and half-god. Brunnen/Chiron explains that the Gods' world is in chaos. Rumor has it that a boy had stolen Zeus' most powerful weapon, the Lightning Bolt. With many gods trying to possess the weapon and overthrown Zeus, it's possible the war among gods is inevitable which means the whole world will see many disasters and cataclysms. And so Percy is taken to a special camp for Demigod where he will learn the art of war, and where he would get to know the Athena's (goddess of war) daughter, the sexy skillful Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario). Is Percy Jackson really the thief? And what will happen to the world?

Being released on Feb 10, I determined to watch this the next day before the cinema got crowded. I figured on Sunday, it would be rather hard to get a good seat. I don't know about you guys, but there's something about Greek Mythology that excited me. My mom would stack the book shelf with the history of 25 Prophets and Apostles and a bunch other of folks legend including those Athena, Zeus and their ilk. From the trailer, you could see that the CGI is superb. So, for a fantasy movie, a superb CGI and a solid fantasy/myth story should already convince fantasy movie fans to watch Percy Jackson.

And I was grateful that I wasn't wrong. Moviegoers indeed have seen so many Greek myth movies, so what does this movie have to offer? Simple, good comedy! Don't worry, it's not to be meant as a comedy film but there were many moments where the audience would laugh out loud. Especially any scene that involves Brandon T. Jackson, his one-liners are just drop-dead hilarious. He plays as a Satyr and Percy's guardian, and Brandon has once again enlivened a movie as he did in Tropic Thunder (2008). Furthermore, we got many subtle/clever insinuation, Hades the god of underworld who looks like a rocker and the gate to hell is located in Hollywood hill and wait till you see the scene in Las Vegas. The action and fighting scenes are also exciting, one scene including a beheaded god is not to be missed, don't get up, wait till after the ending credits roll, a funny surprise.

And for the creatures, wow guys, just great. We got many of 'em and in awesome forms, Harpy, Minotaur, Hydra, Centaur, and Uma Thurman as Medusa. We also got see how hell looks like. And the costumes of the demigods on the camp are simple but great. It's a great location also. Percy Jackson would travel to many places typical ala quest movie. But one more thing that I really really like, is the editing. This film is fast-paced with so many things going on, many things to see and admire, plus many things to make you laugh.

Final Verdict, go and watch this, what are you waiting for?! I'll be darn sure looking for its DVD once it got released.
