You know how sometimes a remake would just smear the original movie, and there is also a combination of sequels that would smear all over the originals. You probably have known another sci-fi flick entitled Alien vs. Predator back in 2004? While that movie was more like a fighting game between two monsters, thus making it downright silly. The originals were much much better and soulful. One of them is Predator, released in 1987 and was headlined by one of Hollywood famous actors, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Predator's storyline was a clever choice by its writer. Amidst the war movies hyped by the Rambo series, Predator takes advantage of choosing war as the main plotline but also spice it up with gory scenes and freaky twist. It's actually better for you, if you haven't known anything at all about the "creature". When I was watching it back in those days, man, was I captivated by the intense and mysterious plot.
Arnold is Dutch, a leader of the United States army elite squad. Dutch along with his team were called to rescue several hostages deep in the jungle in Guatemala. Dutch's old friend Dillon (Carl Weathers) tags along with him to ensure the success of the mission. Dutch and his team were shocked to find dead bodies of Green Beret unit who were in a very bloody horrible condition. However, Dutch successfully accomplishes the mission and could also bring along a girl as POW named Anna (Elpidia Carrillo). However, on their way back to the extraction point where they'll be picked up by a chopper, Dutch and his team was slashed one by one by a mysterious figure who could show up and then disappear without trace. Dutch finds a challenge that might be too difficult for normal human.
---Start of Spoiler Possibility Alert---
That mysterious figure is an outer space creature with more advance technology that could see warm out of human body, could camouflage himself, posses deadly laser weapon. This creature is known as predator who hunt human for trophies.
---Finish of Spoiler Possibility Alert---
Watching Predator, actually you got three in one entertainments: the intensity of war, the shocking bloody gore, and the intriguing story that would make you think "how could the soldiers possibly defeat him?" All those entertainments become more exciting by being supported by the solid performances of its action actors like Carl Weathers and Arnold himself, exotic location in the lush jungle, fast pace action, and good camerawork. Predator was directed by a man who had only directed for the second time in his career, but soon after will also be recognized for his works such as Die Hard, Last Action Hero, The13th Warrior and The Thomas Crown Affair.
In essence Predator is a science fiction film. But with much heftier tone in violence instead on the brainy department. And a bit nitpicking, hmm a minor flaw do exist, you could actually catch Blain Cooper (Jesse Ventura) moves his eyes while Mac (Bill Duke) is mourning after him. It's just simply funny to see this, but this minor flaw doesn't change the whole hard effort that the entire filmmakers and cast have to gone through filming this movie deep in the jungle of Mexico.
Predator, even though released so many years ago, this sci-fi flick hasn't age yet, and it still a joy watching it once in a while. This is one of the movies from the 80s era that's still be truly enjoyed and one of Arnold's most remembered role besides being the Terminator in 1984 or Conan the Barbarian in 1982.
