A big hope, a huge expectation, a really excited feeling is no doubt was on the mind of every single fan of the original movie. A movie that's so breathtakingly awesome, that in my personal opinion, had made other excellent horror movies on that year feel so much inferior. Rec 2 is the sequel of a Spanish Horror movie released back in 2007, Rec (2007). A movie so darn good that Hollywood didn't waste any time to produce a remake of it under the title Quarantine (2008). One thing very clear, it's normal enough if the sequel is inferior to the movie, but it is actually very delightful to inform you guys that the sequel is really a darn good follow-up to the first flick.

Rec 2 picks up immediately the last event from Rec, which is right after Angela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) is taken away by an unseen creature. Afterwards, four members of special forces, like SWAT team, is deployed to the apartment located in Barcelona. Along with them is a man from the health ministry department that is supposed to be responsible to investigate the source of contagious disease spreading out of control in the apartment. To ensure the safety of the people outside the quarantined building and moreover to prevent the virus from coming out, those 5 government men can only get out if the medical officer guy can confirm to the officials outside the building with his own voice to ask for evacuation, and that is called as Voice Recognition Protocol.

Unfortunately, the chief of the SWAT team thinks that they should go look for survivors, while the medical officer's main mission is only to look for a blood sample up in the penthouse room. These 5 people don't realize most of the 'survivors' are no longer in human form, they're already infected with a disease that's becoming more mysterious in origin as we follow their mission in this dark and isolated apartment. Meanwhile in another apartment building, exactly in front of this quarantined apartment, three teenagers along with other residents are being evacuated. Tito (Pau Poch), her sister Mire (Andrea Ros) and their friend, Ori (Àlex Batllori). Tito being the most smart-a*s of all and an adrenaline-junkie-wannabe forces Mire and Ori to sneak up into the quarantined building through the means of sewer system. It proves to be a wrong time to play detective for them for they don't know just how creepy this building is.

What is really going on in this building? Will the SWAT team discover something important to cure or to explain the disease?

Shooting straight, Rec 2 is still one heckuva movie. A fast-moving story of horror, terror, despair and the feeling of helplessness. Rec 2 (2009) still inferior to Rec (2007), but maybe it's due to the lack of surprise-factor. When the first REC came out, it's such a shocking delightful surprise, that for me personally the impression always stuck in mind. So what's new, right? Nothing particularly groundbreaking anymore, but that doesn't mean it's a bad movie. But the filmmakers still employ the same elements that make the first one a major success. Handheld camera, creative storytelling, top-notch performances of the cast and creepy, creepy apartment matched only by the even more creepier creatures. But it is the drama, the terror expressions of the cast and the fast-paced of the movie that once again places the movie above average. Way above average...

REC 2 does contain disturbing contents, and it really is not for kids. Blood is a regular content, and there's one nude scene that is waaayyyy from being enticing. If you're titillated by this scene, boy oh boy you need some help. All in all, basically you need to watch the first one first to fully enjoy the sequel. And after having watched the sequel, I do really expect to see the third one. Buy it!
