Well... This is a touchy subject that Repo Men presents us. Especially in Indonesia. Repo Men is about Debt Collector. Hmmm.... I guess that's a sensitive subject all over the world right? But in my beloved country, Debt Collector is the spotlight to several dreadful disgusting incidents that cost human lives. Several debt collectors from an international private bank allegedly cowardly murdered a disable customer/debtor in their office. And then several weeks later, a separate vice versa incident took place, a debt collector was allegedly brutally killed and got his ear cut off by several angry clients. Suffice it to say, money can take you to figuratively "any place".
So yeah, Repo Men is about Debt Collectors, but it's also a thrilling science fiction movie with character development. Throughout this movie review, minor spoilers are inevitable.
In 2025, people's need has increased significantly, now the people of the world not only need house, cars or furniture or other home appliances, but they also need new organs. And so The Union provides them. A company that gives them those hi-tech Body Organs with towering prices. People still take the credits anyhow after falling to the satanic iconic words of The Union salesman: "You owe it to your family, you owe it to yourself. Please sign the paper".
But The Union is bad... Very bad. They actually wish and plan their loan program so that their customers won't have the time or money to pay, which means they have to be visited and heartlessly (also literally heartless) killed by their prominent debt collectors, Remy (Jude Law) and Jake (Forest Whitaker).
Remy and Jake are partners in killing the clients. Killing, slicing, dissecting and taking people lives are something these two legitimate cowards are fond of. They enjoy their job so much and like to brag their glorious story in killing debtors. All this sickness eventually disgusts Remy's wife, Carol (Carice van Houten), who constantly imposes him to just move into the sales department. Remy eventually listens to his wife, but before actually doing it, he agrees to take the last job of collecting the organs of a musician named T-Bone (RZA), Remy's own idol since childhood. But then suddenly, an unlikely incident transforms Remy's life into deep repentance. What is his repentance? That would be a spoiler, so I give you the minor answers in the paragraph below.
-- Start of Spoiler Possibility Alert --
Remy's having a sh*tty luck with his tools when about to dissect T-Bone, thus making him almost lost his life... So to keep him alive, an artificial heart belongs to The Union had to be inserted into Remy's body. So from this time on, Remy is both a Repo Man and also a Debtor! His perspective and life has changed since then, especially since his unlikely meeting with a desperate singer, Beth (Alice Braga of I am Legend (2007)), who's living in a slum.
-- End of Spoiler Possibility Alert --
Repo Men is a great sci-fi film... It's not the best ever or offers something extraordinary, but there's something very compelling about it. And the moral message the filmmakers are trying to convey is both crystal clear and easily digested. It's something that would remind you of phrases such as "Eat your own medicine" or "What comes around goes around" The viewers are invited to think of how to make the right decision in the right time. There are many things of wisdom comprehension that you can learn from the movie.
And the factors that strengthen this message is the character development of Remy. How he builds conscience over the priceless value of human lives, how he develops something that is called as empathy. It is also important to mention this science fiction flick will not bore you. The pacing is quite fast with many shocking elements to keep you awake. Although the movie shows considerably gratuitous gore and several nude scenes and also brutal fighting scenes, but likely viewers would pay attention more to the story. Such as what will happen to Remy and Jake?
But Repo Men's most memorable scene is undoubtedly, the ending.... Mm-hm, the ending is one awesome shocker. Emotionally-speaking, I actually rather dislike its twist ending, but it really is something logically-acceptable, clever and brilliant. And... it also manages to deviate the ending from most movies' usual cliché closures. Repo Men's finale scene will leave unforgettable impression and likely will be etched on your mind.
