The tagline of this movie says "the best move... is following your heart", Ow such Tacky McCheesy line even though it's true. However, I'll say the real honest line should've been "the easy way to make money... is making a sequel" hahaha Ok I'm just kiddin', but it's the fact, hate it or love it, sequel(s) would always follow a successful movie. It's there, all you have to do is give a chance to it. But should we give a chance to this sequel?
As it written clearly as the title, Save the Last Dance 2 is the sequel to the successful 2001 dance movie Save the Last Dance (2001) with Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas as the leads. This time it's headlined by Izabella Miko who was famous for her role as the Russian Tease in Coyote Ugly (2000) and Columbus Short from You Got Served (2004) and Stomp the Yard (2007).
Izabella Miko is now Sara Johnson. The story continues where Sara is now currently studying Ballet at Juilliard School in New York. Already she is faced with an intense challenge from her LECTURER the world famous Monique Delacroix (Jacqueline Bisset) with equally intensely jealous Mentor Katrina (Maria Brooks). But lucky for her she also has a very friendly roomie, Zoe (Aubrey Dollar) and a talented guest lecturer, Miles Sultana (Columbus Short). Sara's integrity is about to be tested between her dream as Prima Ballerina that requires rigorous exercise in tight schedule and the exciting fun life in Hip Hop with Miles and his friends. She only needs to choose one and only one, her dreams or her 'living the life'... What will she eventually choose?
It's not hard to impress this reviewer with a musical or dance movie. And I generally try not to be very nitpicky in the script or story department. Things that matter the most are the dance skill of all the actresses and the soundtracks that should fit the mood. And I'm glad to say that I don't regret watching this sequel. Izabella Miko is excellent as a Ballerina. In the real life, this Polish girl is really adept at Ballet for having learned it since she was only 10 years old and accepted at the School of American Ballet in New York at the age of 15. And so I say she is perfect for the role, although the script doesn't make her shine as she did in Coyote Ugly. Tre Armstrong, who roles as Candy the girl who dislikes Sara, is also good in her dance performance. But certainly the only actress that shines in terms of acting quality is none other than Jacqueline Bisset, she breathes quality to the already (absolutely) cliché storyline. And even though seems forced to be a comical relief, but Aubrey Dollar does lighten up the atmosphere. But what a waste to let Columbus Short do no dance in this Direct-to-video film, his character should've been able to contribute something to the dance scenes. There are a couple of dance scenes in StLD2, with the finale combining ballet and hip hop, but overall this is a hip hop movie with ballet in it and not vice-versa.
And as you might already guess, most of the tunes here are hip hop. And personally I really like them, but the important thing is that almost every song fits the mood, and the opening scene with Miko doing ballet and hip hop while being interviewed is an excellent one (nice soundtrack too). Overall Save the Last Dance 2 is more lighthearted than Save the Last Dance. It doesn't hold any boyfriend-girlfriend racism issue in it, even though Candy as the angry black girl already is a rusty stereotype and I don't know why she should behave like that? Antagonist doesn't have to be like that. Another pointless thing that I'd like to point is the sex scene in a PG-13-manner between Sara and Miles, why is it pointless? Because it doesn't add anything to the already almost-zero chemistry between Izabella Miko and Columbus Short. Although some might find it actually sexy and not lusty with all the heartbeat-mic and everything, hey it's PG-13 a'ight?!
Of course this dance movie is far from being great, but at least it's true to the theme. And the difficulty, the friendship, the hype pictured in the story might remind me of my college days. So I really think that fellow moviegoers who like dance movies and especially still in college should give this movie a chance. And by "chance" I meant in the form of "rent it!"... And if you could find a cheap rent, that would be a perfect way to save your money to see Save the Last Dance 2.
