The Movie Review

Uhuk uhuk sob sob... Finally after many obstacles to sit my ass in the cinema, I could eventually watch Scream 4. At last! Scream/Scream 1 (1996) had made my school days more fun and almost everyone I knew must've seen or at least know either one of Scream Trilogy. It's kind of a huge thing... Everyone at school was talking about it. Especially since my school located only 100 metres from a mall with comfy cinema/Bioskop. And I always wished I had seen it with my wife, who I never dated back then hehehe. So on Saturday Night, I dragged that soul mate of mine for a midnight show at 11:45 pm screening Scream 4! Yeah baby! :-D Despite her ongoing objection because of wanting to see Beastly (2011) or Rabbit Hole (2011), we still saw it anyway. *grin* *grin* ;-D

I actually a bit confused where to start telling about the plot. Essentially the storyline would make more sense if you already watched Scream 1. Main thing is that everyone crucial to the first movie is present. David Arquette still reprises his role as the bumbling lawman Dewey Riley, only this time he's a Sheriff now. And Courtney Cox is still as his wife, the vigorous, ambitious (and vicious) reporter Gale Weathers. In their small town of Woodsboro, where a serial killer wearing mask (known as Ghostface) had shattered the serenity many years ago (2011 minus 1996 makes it 15 years), the sole survivor of the onslaught has become a prominent writer who's telling the accounts of the murders... She is Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell).

It's only a matter of time before Sidney has to return to his hometown to greet the fans of her book and the townsfolk. The timing could not be more perfect because the people are "celebrating" the 15th anniversary of Woodsboro Massacre with Ghostface masks are put on top of the street lamps. But all of a sudden brutal murders occur, taking the lives of two teenagers and leaving the evidence and smeared blood in Sidney's car trunk. The seemingly random killings are officially on and Sheriff Dewey wants to solve the murders without the help of his wife in the name of Pride (Yeah right Dewey!). While Sidney herself is doing whatever she can to protect her still-in-high-school cousin, Jill (Emma Roberts, daughter of Eric Roberts), who also becomes the target of Ghostface. Unfortunately, Jill is not focus to help herself because of trying to recover from the betrayal of her lover, Trevor (Nico Tortorella).

In this rather chaotic condition of bloody incidents, still there are several high school students and film geeks of a movie club that holds a nite of Stab-a-Thon, a movie night where all the horror genre enthusiasts come into one secret place and watch the films together. What film? It's a slasher movie called Stab that has run from Stab 1 to Stab 7. And that night these kooky students are going to view those movie in a single row of excitement, or so they think...

So what is the killer aftering this time? What is the purpose? Sidney, Dewey and Gale are likely had to reunite themselves in order to solve these gory brutal crime...

What can I say? I love the series, at least the first one was memorable. No no no, that's an undermining tone, Scream is Fantastic! Brilliantly written and cleverly executed with neat editing, awesome musical scoring and perfect casting! That's Scream 1. And Scream 4? Well, it's really a surprise for me that after this long years and then I came to the cinema with fairly high expectation, Scream 4 did really satisfy! It's everything that I wished for! I felt like being turned back in time to 1996, only this time I came with my wife! Hmmm, thank you Wes Craven.

You know, that sometime a sequel/remake does feature cast that are different with the original, and then put on some tacky storyline that's targeting more on quick-cash than the affection of the fans. Scream 4 is anything but that! Seriously, the jokes, the satirical innuendo to slasher films of the past, the suspense and cool one-liners uttered by the characters. But most of all Scream 4 still can surprisingly deliver what I call as Alfred-Hitchcock effect! A part of a horror/thriller movie where we are cleverly pointed to have wrong impressions of who the killer is. This term of twisted misleading might be known also as Red Herring. I take this opportunity to proudly say that this time --unlike Scream 1-- I could exactly guess who the killer is. Hehehe, don't take me as cocky, it's just an expression of how excited I am. Imagine... after 15 years, and the effect is still pretty much the same? Niceeee....

And then after the super duper cool ending which is also artistically dramatic, I remember the conversation circling inside the school back then. It was "Lo kagak bakal tahu deh akhirnya. Nonton deh, keren lagi!" :-) those sentences were the ones that we used to say about Scream. In English that would be "You'll never guess the ending, just see it for yourself, it's cool!" So what are you waiting for guys, grab that popcorn and have a great time. And by the way.... "What's your favorite scary movie?" ;-)
