There's always someone better than us! Sometimes it does suck, yes of course. Especially if you loathe that person, you just wish if you're finally be able to be better than him/her. But what if you have a crush on that person? In a nutshell what if you're nothing and she's something? This is a classic --if not moth-eaten old-- story of trying to get the "She's-so-pretty-no-flaw-popular-hot girl". One should not expect something extraordinary out of a movie like this. If you can look at this as a cookie-cutter brainless teen romantic flick, a rent is actually worth your money.
There's a very nice and kind-hearted guy named Kirk (Jay Baruchel of Tropic Thunder (2008)) who leads a normal mundane life and works as a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) agent at the airport. Kirk is a young man wth severe self-esteem issue and to he's just got dumped by his girlfriend, Marnie (Lindsay Sloane). Strange enough, Marnie is adopted by Kirk's parents which means they live in the same house although she already has a new boyfriend. Feeling hopeless and desperate, Kirk never imagines that one day he could date the perfect girl who he helps at the TSA security checkpoint, Molly McCleish (Alice Eve).
Kirk's close friends, Stainer (T. J. Miller), Devon (Nate Torrence) and Jack (Mike Vogel) can not believe what is happening to Kirk of how can a girl with a perfect score (10) dates a guy with an average score (5). But the biggest ruckus is going to happen in Kirk's house when Molly is coming to his house and apparently has no trouble adapting with the kooky unusual behaviour of Kirk's family who doesn't even value Kirk himself and often crosses the line of decency and craves for the F word as the conversation building block.
Smooth it is, for their love life. But soon enough Kirk's issue and Molly's secret will test their Power of Love (Waks! Did I really say that?!). So what will happen to them? And what are their friends going to do to help these two love birds?
I'm dead on positive the writers intended this movie to be funny and amusing. But the fact is, it's better to view this movie as a regular teen film or run-of-the-mill comedy romantic, even though the actors are no longer teen. The laughing moment is almost none. I did chuckle a few times though but that's it. But as a movie She's Out of My League is actually pretty entertaining. The story moves in enjoyable steady pace. The editing is good and the songs are also fit to the mood and emotion. Alice Eve performance is charming, she gives a different toiuch to the cliché character of "She's all that Girl" with her sympathetically caring body language and profile. You might remember her from her memorable performance in Crossing Over (2009).
But the flaws did put me into minor shock. I mean, whow, just whow... What a bunch of annoying characters thrown into one. For most of the time there are only three types of characters here: the ignorance, the annoying and the mundane. From the beginning, yelling and irritating remarks are all you see. The early scene at the airport just makes people feel more insecure about plane and all its arrogant security check. And then we also got to see The-bestfriend-of-the-popular-girl (Krysten Ritter as Patty) as the annoying b*tch. This romantic comedy feature is often overshadowed by uncalled for vulgarity of language. Using F word is admittedly common for a teen film, but this film doesn't serve a good example. Superbad (2007) would be a good example to that.
But at least, shocking and minor repugnant like this is better than boredom. And funny enough, I didn't feel bore. And maybe also because even though everything is predictable but at least the ex-boyfriend of Molly doesn't act like a jerk as the audience might expect from a movie of this genre. And there is also a smile-inducing twist inside the airplane in the near-ending scene. In a nutshell, I would have seen this movie in Cinema if the admission ticket had been cheap enough. And I surely think the fans might want to give the DVD a spin.
