Sci-Fi Channel this time released their flick that strangely not based on a fictional story. Hmm, it turns out that Snakehead Terror tells of fictional accounts of what really happened in Crofton, Maryland, U.S when the locals find Snakehead fishes swarming the local lake with 6 mother f' fishes and about a thousand offspring according to Wikipedia. So supposably and surely hopefully this another creature feature from the famous/notorious Sci Fi channel could be better than their other flicks, so let's check it out.
Snakehead Terror revolves around a good Sheriff Patrick James (Bruce Boxleitner) who lives in a small town with his daughter Amber (Chelan Simmons). Amber and her friends are having a blast on the nearby lake partying which unfortunately leads to her boyfriend's demise. Sheriff warns the Mayor Cole (Scott Swanson) but (as typically monster movies) no one heeds his warning. Luckily, a hottie biologist coming to town named Lori Dale (Carol Alt) helps to investigate the case. But Amber is so furious with his boyfriend's death that she provokes her friends to go kill those pesky creatures themselves. Armed with a gun and a boat, four of them are definitely looking for trouble out there. Will they survive and even get to exterminate the fishes? And what will Sheriff James and Lori do to deal with this town problem?
Snakehead? WTF is that, right? It's real fish actually, and not because I've read it on Wikipedia but because I have also seen it myself in... a hospital! Yes, a hospital in my town used to have Snakeheads in the waiting hall for the patients! Cool and freaky in the same time. Anyway, it's ironic that when Sci Fi Channel released a film about big giant croc or (again) big giant snake, they can be conceived more by the audience. So what's Sci Fi has in store for us this time? In Snakehead, even though we don't have any nudity but one element of exploitation is used, which is gore. Several gory scenes with several body parts chopped off and munched by those fishes can be found in here. I must say, it's pretty surprising actually. Quite excessive bloody bodies (though dry) are scattered evenly throughout the whole running time.
Still, the CGI of the fishes is as lame as usual. Snakehead tries to be a serious horror movie, without adding any single element of wittiness which is a shame. Sometimes a movie with this low quality could be much better with the advent of humor. But if you respect the story behind it, perhaps you would give it a go, I involuntarily grabbed a magazine next to me and start to read it. And it only happens when a movie starts to get the phase of boredom. Another flick concerning the same incident in Crofton is Frankenfish, which I found was better, for more interesting scenes it contains.
If you are a die-hard fan of creature feature horror, you might consider rent it or even buy it. This type of movie usually could give us a time of brainless fun. But Snakehead Terror is not so-bad-it's-good, it's just not good.
