The Movie Review
Last night was the 2nd time I saw Something Borrowed. Once is actually enough to comprehend this chick flick, but this time I saw it with my wife. The 1st time was back in Pondok Indah Mall, South Jakarta, after joining a large crowd watching The Great Flying Trapeze circus from Las Vegas. And if I had known better about the film, I would rather take more pictures of Laura and her flying cirque friends instead of spending money seeing Something Borrowed --tickets are pricier on Saturday/Sunday/Holiday in Indonesia. So there I was sitting clueless hoping for some romantic feel good film, but man I was wrong. Sigh... Something Borrowed is a movie easy to admire to some degrees but it is a romantic comedy hard to like.

The Great Flying Trapeze
Rachel and Darcy are BFF. Since their childhood, Rachel is inseparable with Darcy. Now in their adulthood, Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) is a successful attorney but she doesn't even have a boyfriend, let alone husband. On the contrary, Darcy (Kate Hudson) is more of an outgoing person and carefree of her career but she's proud of herself for she's soon going to marry the best man she could've ever had, Dex (Colin Egglesfield). Actually Dex knew Rachel first when they're together back in college and they seemed to have mutual affection to each other, but being a truly extremely pushover, Rachel just gave the way to Darcy who suddenly popped out and flirted aggressively with Dex. Dex thought that Rachel had set them up to be lovers, so he eventually fell to the lustful b*tchy hands of Darcy.
On the outside, Darcy and Rachel seems like supporting friends, but a good close look to their relationship shows that it's a boss-and-subordinate kind of thing. Darcy always gets what she wants simply because she asserts her wishes and Rachel will happily let her! But, it's still a okay if Darcy is a altruistic girl, no.... She's 100% selfish who doesn't care sh*t about Rachel or her feelings. Rachel is a smart 30-year old woman who doesn't know how to defend herself and letting herself to be the eternal slave of friendship with the wrong person. And Dex is bumbling man who can not make up his mind. It's Ethan who is the sole character that saves the movie from being a 100-minute show of jerkos. The ending is terrible but even more terrible if you skip the end credits, because it has bonus scene pertaining Darcy and Ethan.
Direct from Las Vegas, USA. 18 June - 10 July 2011
Something Borrowed often tip-toes between romantic-comedy and serious meaningful drama. It's not the story or the romance that engrossed me to keep on watching it, but the moral message of "Getting out from living in lies" which I consider as the true precious point of the movie. The rest just mediocre. Perhaps the only other thing that implicitly stands out is the chemistry between Ginnifer Goodwin and Colin Egglesfield. Or the touching open-up-to-each-other scene between Ethan (John Krasinski) and Rachel, my wife cried at this scene :-) Unfortunately flaws are also explicitly calling out to audiences in form of aforementioned annoying characters which I think only appeals to Psychological students. But if you could see this while not being emotional, you could probably laugh at the obnoxious characters and realize that sometimes real life sucks. But that's real life, while a romantic comedy chick flick --though there are many chuckling moments in Something Borrowed-- should give the audience this good warm feelings once you leave your seats.
