The premise of Suspension I truly believe must have flashed in almost everyone's mind once in a while. To stop time...Just like when you haven't done your homework, you're late for school, haven't studied for your quiz or final exam, haven't prepared anything for your date, haven't paid your rent, or whatever. Suspension's strongest plus point is this premise.
The story follows the life of Daniel, that after the death of his family in a car accident, this ordinary family man discovers that he could stop time by pressing the pause button on his handy cam. Thankfully Daniel (Scott Cordes) is not an ambitious person with wicked plans on his mind. This grieveing man only wants one thing, to help the newlywed Sarah, who also lost her husband in the same car accident with Daniel's family, when their cars are crashing each other. Daniel's only flaw though is that he's unaware of the power he possesses and accidentally overdoes things, things are better for Sarah afterwards, but having known nothing about Daniel except for sharing the same tragedy, Sarah (Annie Tedesco) is simply extremely terrified with the changes around her, and how she always collapses after Daniel stops time. Will this old man and the young woman find common ground where they could really share their grief normally?
Having a premise that could stop the flow of time is actually not a novelty anymore. Decades ago I remember a TV series, a situational-comedy more precisely, called Out of this World (if I'm not mistaken the title). The sitcom tells about a young girl who could stop time by touching both hands fingers, she has a human mom but a good-looking alien dad, the one she inherits the power from. While that sitcom falls to the comedy genre, Suspension falls to the science fiction that's heavy on its drama. There's nothing hilarious or cheering about this sci-fi film. It simply follows how two grown ups try to handle their mourning and go on with their life.
The audience would simply wonder what would Daniel finally does to Sarah. But thanks too the acting performance of the Scott Cordes, we as the audience could be emotionally involved and continuously intrigued each time Daniel presses the pause button. It's interesting to see Daniel passes by his environment where everything and everyone just suddenly stop at their places in very strange positions, while they're walking, talking, exercising and everything. The strange atmosphere being built up also thanks to the twilight-zone like musical score.
The biggest flaw is there's actually not much going on in this film, in a sense if the premise doesn't suit you, then the whole things in Suspension won't suit you either. And the performance of Annie is kinda wooden too, not when she's frozen by time of course.
In a nutshell, Suspension is good enough to watch for you who might wonder what the adults do to release the pain of losing someone they love if they had the power to stop time.
