Sometimes people can be bad not solely just because they are bad, but because their current situation and condition are just extremely bad for them. This is when some people could easily incline to do something nasty that they feel they "had to". Another top notch example of this, is given by Nicolas Cage as the bad lieutenant on this motion picture. A movie open-for debate whether it is a remake of the 1992 Bad Lieutenant by Abel Ferrara. A remake or not, The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans is a good movie though the taste may not cater to every moviegoer especially those looking for popcorn entertainment.
In Louisiana, Nicolas Cage is The Bad Lieutenant Terrence McDonagh. Terrence was promoted as Lieutenant because of his heroic effort in saving a person's life right after Hurricane Katrina. But this comes with consequences, he's suffering severe back injury because of his act and had to take painkillers for the rest of his life. He hides this fact from his superior and to cope with his condition, he had to bully people and do some other unlikely stuff to get drug. But as life goes on, Terrence becomes addicted to drugs. He's also has a father who's trying to recover from drugs and an alcoholic step-mother. Terrence also has a girlfriend, Frankie (Eva Mendes), who's working as prostitute and practically becomes his only true friend. With his drug problems and gambling issue, Terrence is thrown deeper into money problems, and the way he handle these problems only gets him into even more serious ones. And all of those misfortunes are happening while he is on a serious case of 5 homicides involving a big drug dealer named Big Fate (Xzibit). What and how exactly is Bad Lieutenant Terrence going to live his life and solve the case?
Nicolas Cage has given remarkable performance as the bad cop. Actually calling his bad needs some explanation. Bad in this case is not literally bad like killing someone or doing robbery, he's even considerably more nicer to witnesses compare to other "non-bad" cops. Bad means being rough in handling the case, having bad attitude, hot-headed and actually he's seeing in everything in plain black and white but always ends up in grey area. He doesn't hesitate to do anything necessary to achieve his goal in completing a mission. What makes him bad is his habit of using coke due to his untimely illness.
Problems after problems coming to Terrence like water bursting through broken dam. When trying to be legit and legal, he's keep messing with the wrong people which only ending up in even more deeper problems. But there's something particularly consistent about this man. He never gives up even though it seems he's more of an indifferent man, but he shows love to his prostitute girlfriend. A really interesting character.
Nicolas Cage's performance is the main central success of movie. Appearing as someone tired, confused, on the edge, disoriented in life, Cage has delivered great acting. The way he looks, wearing his slightly oversized and underwaist trousers, moving rather "high", he really could depict someone "bad" as a police officer. But it's not just him. The characters and the events that this bad lieutenant meets and goes through are just also unpredictable. You think Terrence would do this, when in fact he would do crazier stuff. And you think the people he interact with would do this, but they would do other things more emotional. What makes this movie a good drama, is because that even though some actions are unpredictable, but they are believable to be happening in real life. Yes, there is some scene that's fairly uncommon, but suprisingly some scenes could really crack you up or at least makes you chuckle. Wait for the Iguana scenes. Were those scenes intended as dark comedy? I really believe they were.
So if you do have certain "artistic" taste about a motion picture, this drama crime movie is really worth the look. But if you're looking for popcorn entertianment with lotsa gunfight, you better look for other titles.
> This is a more popcorn-entertainment-ly amusing film taking on the same theme: Dead Man Running (2009).
