The Movie Review
Let's commence the MidDateNite Movie! Yeaaa :-) But... No movie seems worth our time :-/ except... Maybe The Beaver! At least it's Mel Gibson so we thought just how bad could it be?
Besides I personally welcome this drama after seeing a lousy remake of Mel Gibson's titled What Women Want (2011). I hoped Mel Gibson still could deliver the charm in this acting-ly challenged drama about a man who talks with a stuffed toy.
Mel Gibson as Walter is a downtrodden man alienated by the outside world and even by his own family for having plunged into deep depression. He's now a lethargic man who never has the spirit to do practically anything. He just sleeps all the time! Walter is actually the CEO of a kid's toys company however due to his lack of skill, his company is going nowhere forward. In times like this, his wife then left him and his oldest

son hates the guts out of him and is trying to be anyone but his father.
However, on one night, Walter finds an old almost-moth-eaten stuffed toy in a form of a Beaver (The Animal!!) that kids could put their hands inside it and make it talk, just like Sesame Street! Once Walter puts it in his left hand, the Beaver suddenly could talk as the manifest of Walter's more spirited personality. Walter is now an organized man, romantic, spirited and creative. He's back to his company makes some considerable progress and he patch things up with his wife and his youngest son Henry. But is this Beaver-Buffer really a safe thing for him? What will happen to his life and his family?
The Beaver features two prominent well-known actors in the lead roles, Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, and this film was also directed by Jodie Foster. I don't have much to say about the movie, except the visuals which are really cumbersome in terms of colouring. Gloomy choice of palette is acceptable for this serious drama about life, but they don't have to be like that all the time. Even Walter's office is not made to be more cheerful as a nice variation to all the gloominess.
Don't expect to see a drama like this to give you a feel-good moment. Because of its ultra-serious nature, you will leave the cinema wondering about life and all its possibilities. It may even bring down the pessimistic people. Don't let the cute Beaver fools you, it ain't no movie for kids, aside from its harsh point of view of life, mostly teenagers or kids would also be leaving the theater wondering "Whow that's too heavy" But I guess it's a good drama for grown ups as it depicts the difficult relationship between father and son, husband and wife, and a middle aged man and his own identity...
