'There is no Planet B!'

'Change the politics, not the climate!'

More often than not, average moviegoers out there know and remember the title of a movie better than the director who made the movie. Last month's 2012 was such a huge blast that cinemas near where I live were flocked by teen and adults alike. But do they know that the director of 2012 had previously made 2 catastrophe movies before? One of them is The Day After Tomorrow. No, it's not as good as 2012, but with the issue of global warming increasingly popular by now, disaster-movie loves might really want to check this one out.

Climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) is seen working on the Antarctica with his colleagues, Frank and the junior member of the team Jason. Suddenly they witness that the ice is cracking. Jack's concern is assumed to be sensational panic by everyone who attends the meeting of the climate changes. It's not very long before Jack's theory of the new ice age is seemingly coming, and it's even worse for it's coming much much sooner that Jack has predicted before. Unfortunately for Jack, his son, Sam Hall (Jake Gyllenhaal) is currently attending a competition in New York, which one of the area that got inflicted the worst. Jack, Sam, and all the people of the northern hemisphere of the world have to endure once again, the ice age. What would they do to survive?

About the release date of this movie..., of course for me and other people lived in Indonesia or neighbouring countries it was of significant matter. If you still remember, it was the same year that the gigantically humongous Tsunami struck Aceh, Indonesia (in December 26th) with Tsunami similar to the one in this movie. Of course not as high as in this movie, but sigh... if you happened to see the amateur videos that some of the survivors were recording, then afterwards, not a single (I repeat) not a single disaster movie could make you feel thrilled. There is nothing like the real disaster, a disaster that sadly had taken a toll as much as 230,000 lives in Sri Lanka, India, Somalia, Thailand (among other) with estimated 160,000 victims in Indonesia alone. I had watched The Day After Tomorrow before the Tsunami struck, so I still got the thrill (plenty) from the movie. The aforementioned Tsunami is mainly because of the Earthquake while The Day After Tomorrow is because of global warming, but both involving enormous mass of water, in case you're wondering.

It is obviously clear that an estimated budget of $125,000,000 was really put for a great use. I really enjoy how Rolland Emmerich play with the camerawork and how he depicts the ravaging storm, ice, water, wind to instantly (and also gradually) destroy mankind and its civilization. Simply put, there is no doubt of the cutting edge visual effects in this disaster film. The first portion of the movie where we see how the storm devastates the cities is the best part of the movie, people panicking, freezing water, rapid tidal wave, multiple tornadoes crushing the skyscrapers, reporters are panicking, and all of them happen in a great pace.

And then the drama, well I wouldn't say that it's completely effective, but still by Dennis, Jake, Sela Ward's performances, the drama scenes are more powerful, even though mostly illogical. At the core this movie is still about destroy-search-locate-survive routine of a disaster-movie-guidebook. But I certainly don't mind that, I came to the cinema, bought the ticket and got what I had wanted... splendid disaster movie.

If I were one of the protesters currently in copenhagen, I would suggest them to stage a gigantic screen for all of us to see this movie and gain confidence to continue the protest, even though scientists stated that the science in The Day After Tomorrow was lousy, it's still better than getting handcuffed for throwing cobblestones at the UN meeting building. But heck, whether you're a believer of global warming or not, as an entertainment movie, The Day After Tomorrow surely amused and entertained me greatly back in the cinema in 2004. My advice, go to your friend's house that has a solid (and expensive) sound system, pop in the CD and enjoy the show!
