It's 2019, the nuclear holocaust has ended but now the human race is on the brink of extinction! Finding another human being still breathing is a blessing. But even in this era of desperation, still there's a group of people who called themselves The Templars looking for other people just to kill them and wipe them out. This bunch of sick dudes is headed by a mean man named One (George Eastman). One has got the beef with a lone warrior named Scorpion (Giancarlo Prete). Scorpion, who is an ex-templar, in his journey manages to save a hot brunette wearing kinky outfit, Alma (Anna Kanakis), which eventually makes her fall into Scorpion love trap and makes love to him passionately (well, actually rather unconvincingly). All this, while on the watch of a mysterious man named Nadir (Fred Williamson).
Scorpion doesn't get along quite well with his old acquaintance, Nadir, thus making him always acts alone. But because Alma has gotten quite severe wound because of the ongoing war, Scorpion reluctantly follows Nadir who's gonna bring them to a group of survivors living in a caravan (Gypsy-like formation). Meanwhile, One's subordinates are itching to overthrow One from leadership and to eliminate Scorpion themselves, despite One is seemingly doesn't have the balls anymore to fight against the great warrior Scorpion. But in act of post-apocalyptic heroic act, Scorpion decides to leave the caravans group to wander alone again. A decision that he's gonna regret it for The Templars, especially their leader One, is a very depraved son of a b*tch! What will happen between Nadir, Scorpion, Alma and One?
Okay, this is one of the worst Sci-Fis ever! So brace yourself for some trashy cinema from Italy. It's one of the Italian rip-off answers to Australian Mad Max (1979), that's what The New Barbarians is. Based on the story written by Tito Carpi, essentially plot, twist or storyline are absent. You won't root for either Scorpion or One or Nadir. You won't really care of what would happen to them. And you won't be shocked either by the contents. Well, probably you will be surprised to see how awful the costume is. For example, how can you root for a big macho man, One (George Eastman), wearing white war outfit with his black underpants on the outside?! What? Do I hear somebody say Superman? Okay, that's an anomaly. But in this movie these black underpants are things that belong to a lingerie boutique!
I would very much like to say The New Barbarians ---aka I nuovi barbari or Warriors of the Wasteland--- as a movie of so-bad-it's-good category, but it's not. It's not good. Even the location is very dull, only empty outdoor with little-to-nothing elements indicating a world in a state of destruction. Very different with George Eastman, Anna Kanakis, and Enzo G. Castellari's next collaboration in 2019: After the Fall of New York (1983). But at least there are some points that may amuse you on some level. The cars are modified into killing machines with extra rockets, guns and rotating blades and even swirling spear. The movie is gory, bodies got exploded, head got decapitated and people got burnt. The effect is very cheesy so all the killings are not disturbing, even though they are very graphic in depicting it. Actually it's fun to see all the killing scenes, dolls are getting blown apart and as you can see on the screenshot below, a dude with no head riding a bike! Saucy! And on many scenes where the victims of explosions are thrown away by the blast, it is clear, the director must have made trampoline producers very happy!
And last but not least... Anna Kanakis ---which serves practically only as eye-candy and lead actor's obligatory love interest--- gets to show some valuable amount of hotness and toplessness. But there is one disturbing scene involving the fight between One and Scorpion, a scene so unnecessary that makes the movie even more awful. So awful I really wished I've seen the uncut version!
In a nutshell, an average or general moviegoer would be a squinny when watching the movie, there's practically nothing redeemable for me to warrant a rent. I guess, it is the very die-hard fans of 80s post apocalyptic cinema that would be drop dead curious to get a hold of this B-movie, because speaking on the level with you all, you got to be very lucky to catch The New Barbarians on TV. Rarity does beget curiosity.
> Fans of 80s Italian Post Apocalyptic flicks... Drop by!: 2019: Dopo La Caduta di New York (1983), 1990: I guerrieri del Bronx (1982) and Fuga dal Bronx (1983).
