Directed by Joe Johnston of Jumanji (1995) and with a big budget of $150 million, The Wolfman arguably one of the most ambitious movies dedicated to explain the inner side of a monster so-called Werewolf. The Wolfman is a remake of another movie released way back in 1941 titled The Wolf Man. When it came out, I guessed the ad team of The Wolfman had made quite an effort to buzz about the movie! But man I'm glad to have missed seeing it in cinemas.
The Wolfman is set in year 1891 and revolves around an honorable man named Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro) who's famous for being such critically-acclaimed opera star. But he decided to go back to the Talbot estate located in Blackmoor, a countryside Hamlet in England where almost of all 309 residents frowned upon any kind of foreigner especially the gypsies. Lawrence actually hates his old house because of his weird-behaving father (Anthony Hopkins) but Lawrence feels compelled to do so because his brother's fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), asks his help to find Lawrence's missing brother, Ben Talbot.
Arriving on Blackmoor, Lawrence gets the unfriendly welcome from the residents as predicted but what he didn't predict is the attack of a savage creature which kills anyone in such swift and terrifying simplicity. The Blackmoorers call it as the work of gypsy's pet the Dancing Bear while the gypsies call it as the work of the devil. But only Lawrence who knows the true being of the creature up close and personal, and he may not be ready for the consequences...
There are two versions of The Wolfman which both suffers significant flaw. The shorter version which run only 103 minutes suffers from the lack of character-development or character-background. While the unrated director's cut which runs 119 minutes suffers from darkening boredom. With such monotonous visuals and mind-numbing story, The Wolfman basically a showcase for the talented make-up artist. But without solid interesting storyline, it's pretty much almost like seeing a werewolf statue in a museum (that would be too extreme, yes) but even with those big 4 names including Hugo Weaving (as Francis Aberline of Scotland Yard), The Wolfman shockingly manages to make itself devoid of any significant thrills, emotion, suspense or meaningful drama.
Instead, it gives enough gory scenes of the werewolf mutilating its victims and ripping them apart. This gory scene which takes place in the Gypsy's community is the only great thing worth watching. Other than that, this horror movie just feel too sterile. The story seems try to deviate from the commonly-seen-nowadays werewolf of cheesiness or romanticism. In fact you don't get to see any corny stuff or excessive cheesiness let alone cheesy nudity, which are good by the way, but without meaningful twists or other shock values, The Wolfman is just run-of-the-mill horror film with splendid hairy make-up. Even the cliché-ridden werewolf movie from France titled The Hair of the Beast (2010) is a much better entertainment!
