The Movie Review
Upon my visit to the cinema yesterday, I've found there were many movies with wings, in other words, it's full of fantasy flicks featuring winged creatures. There're Tooth Fairy, Legion and Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. So I decided to watch 2 out of 3. Tooth Fairy was a must-see when I was taking my dentist girlfriend out to a movie.
Tooth Fairy centers on a currently-loser man named Derek Thompson (Dwayne 'Rock' Johnson). He used to be a professional hockey player but he's now stuck in the minor league and he's never score any goal in the last nine years. Derek is currently having a relationship with a widow, Carly (Ashley Judd) who has a little girl of 6-year old,

Tess (Destiny Whitlock) and a teenage son, Randy (Chase Ellison). When Tess' lost a tooth, she puts her tooth under her pillow hoping to get the money from the tooth fairy, but she couldn't find it. This is supposed to be Derek Thompson's responsibility to put that money but he forgets to do so and saying firmly that there is no such thing as tooth fairy. One night he gets a 'summon' or a forced invitation from the Tooth Fairy land. He's sentenced to work as tooth fairy for two weeks because he has caused many people to lose their dream and imagination.
Of course this hot-headed and stubborn hockey player is not giving up easily to the fairy godmother Lily's (Julie Andrews of The Sound) demand, but he soon finds out the only way to get rid of his newly-implanted wings is to go along with his new job. He's not alone though, his case worker and mentor, Tracy (Stephen Merchant) is sent to guide him. Still, Derek Thompson insists on doing everything his way, the hockey toothy fairy way. Could he succeed in his job and getting his normal life back? And most importantly could he reach his dreams?
Dwayne Johnson or better known as The Rock, is not a new face to either comedy or sports realm, which is what defines Tooth Fairy, only this film has a hefty dose of fantasy. You might probably still remember his performance in The Game Plan (2007) and Gridiron Gang (2006). This time he tries his luck as a hockey player. As some of you might already guess, this movie sell the premise of how a Burly macho figure of The Rock could be funny and sweet. And he is the center of this movie. And I couldn't say his bad or good in Tooth Fairy. Because honestly, overall, this movie suck big time! I always like genre mixture, but that's tricky. Tooth Fairy tries to combine comedy and fantasy and sport! It's like watching several movies edited into one especially the sports parts and the comedy family parts.
Granted some parts are actually really funny and it could make the audience in the cinema laughed out loud, like the scene of the absent-minded family and their dog, this always cracked me up. Or when Derek calls Stephen Merchant as a walking tooth-pick. But for most of the time the cinema is quiet... For most parts, either the storyline or the comedy is forced. We got to see Derek seriously playing hockey, training Tracy in the hockey way, Derek playing drums with the boy playing guitar, it's such a bad mixed up. Derek getting his fairy magical stuff in the fairyland from Jerry (Billy Crystal) is also not enough to create big imagination. Actually I don't really object to the little dose of each element of comedy, family, sports and fantasy as long as the overall result of the movie is entertaining. A couple next to me could laugh really loud at times and at one moment I could really hear him snoozing quite out loud.
I wanted to recommend this for you who have little children as an entertainment for family, but I guess the best way to view this is to wait for its DVD since there are many parts of this movie that you could skip easily going to the bathroom, doing chores or making some popcorn for the whole family. Popcorn... yes that's what kept me awake watching Tooth Fairy.
Many critics expected Tooth Fairy to be 2010, January's Paul Blart: Mall Cop, but the winner is definitely Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009).
