'There is no Planet B!' 'Save the Humans!' 'Change the politics, not the climate!'
It's the second time I use those sentences borrowed from the banners that protesters were carrying in copenhagen over UN meeting. After yesterday I published a review of NYC: Tornado Terror. Hey, a movie reviewer could also concern with the weather you know! Okay, okay I'm just trying to sympathize for them, and it's not the real reason why I viewed again Tornado: Der Zorn des Himmels. To be honest, initially I just want to see how Mina Tander performed again after the first time I saw her in Harte Jungs, and of course to see Lisa Martinek who's then-already a mature woman. Her performance when she was 27-year-old in On the Wings of Love (1999), was something that stayed on my mind for quite a while.
Tornado: Der Zorn des Himmels is movie made for TV released in 2006, though I never caught it on TV. Directed by Andreas Linke, the story focuses on the coming home of Jan Berger (Matthias Koeberlin) to his hometown in Berlin. After studying Twister in Oklahoma, USA for 4 years, Jan is now had to deal with his decision for having abandoned his girlfriend, Eva Keil (Mina Tander) and disappointed his father, the head of the local weather institute. Eva is now able to forgive him but she's already with Bruno (Sascha Göpel), Jan's best friend.
Not very long, Jan's experience in Oklahoma is going to be tested when a small twister suddenly formed and killed a farmer in a place 280 km west from Berlin. Jan knows this is not something to be underestimated, but either his father or the government people think of his concern as a publicity stunt to gain name. Thankfully his mild-mannered blind sister, Sophie (Lisa Martinek) and the head of the Berlin's fire squad, Andreas Schütte (Martin Lindow) still believe in him. Surprise, surprise, the tornado is no joke, and when the real super tornado strikes, will it all be too late for the people of Berlin?
I never thought I would enjoy this disaster movie. Tornado: Der Zorn des Himmels has a good drama and action thanks to the experience cast in the TV world and good CGI for all of those twisters. The pace is steady and tight, with no utterly-void moments to disturb the story and there is always something going on that made me stay watching. 2 hours and it doesn't feel that long, good editing. Germany had also released a tornado film a year before called Category 7: The End of The World (2005), of which a sequel to USA production, Category 6: Day of Destruction (2004). So could we probably consider Der Zorn des Himmels as Category 8?
Anyhow, if we're talking about tornado flick, then still I like Twister (1996) better, but as a TV movie I could actually enjoy this flick even though I don't get to see Lisa Martinek's more daring exposure of her beauty that I initially was hoping to see, and I don't even need chips to get through this film till the end. Very recommended for fellow moviegoers who fond of disaster movie, I hope it would bring good time for you.
