Third time's a charm they say... But this third time of Wrong Turn was full of question and expectation. This Wrong Turn here is the third entry in Wrong Turn franchise which makes them a Trilogy. The first one was relatively week and the second one was positively strong, but both movies have something in common, a total hack job! So I watch this third movie mostly because of my curiosity. Would it be just another rip-off of other more famous slasher film? Would it be better than the last one? Many other questions popped out in my mind, and let's just take a look deeper into the woods of Wrong Turn.
Some damn college kids with predictably naughty intention are river-rafting in the Bluefish River area in Virginia. While taking a rest in a riverside, an incident happens, leaving only 1 survivor, a cute brunette (Janet Montgomery). The story than shifts in to a prison in West Virginia, Grafton Penitentiary. The warden is preparing inmates transfer to Hazelton escorted by officer Nate Wilson (Tom Frederic) and his best friend Walter (Chucky Venice). They will transfer 5 convicts including a very dangerous convict, Carlos Chavez (Tamer Hassan) and undercover US Marshall Willy Juarez (Christian Contreras). But discovering that the initially-planned transfer plan has leaked to Chavez's men, the warden reroutes the transfer through the old mill road in Greenbrier Backcountry. A very unwise decision because it is a notorious place where mutants cannibal rednecks are hunting people for food.
Imagine the chaos... a cute survival girl desperately seeking help from any-f*cking-one she can find. While a bunch of tough, and greedy men are also being hunted. Yes, imagine the drama and the intense chasing scenes that would ensue...tee hee more popcorn please!!!
As predicted, the movie will please the slasher fans out there. You can tell that just by seeing the opening gambit. Boobies and lotsa of gore! And all that set against beautiful backdrop of sunny riverside, you know, complete with lovely girls sunbathing topless? Yup, campy and cheesy for the sake of the fans. From this on, I knew I shouldn't be too critical for a movie like this, and f*ck it! Why would I want to do that anyway? Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead is a pure popcorn entertainment with extra cheese! The bottom line is, if you love the opening scenes, you would love the rest of the movie and vice versa. It's some kind of Hate it or Love it type situation, because the opening says a lot about this horror movie.
The truth is I like it a lot, love would be too strong a word. So before I get more to the good parts, it's better for you all to know the bad stuff first. Not much actually, but one thing annoys me so much is the abysmal acting! What's up with that? I think those actors were trying to compete with the trees of Virginia to see who the real wood was! I really shocked by this, even some Indie movies have better actors than them. What's up with the budget mate? Just when you start to feel intrigued and carried away by the intensity of the situation, their performances (especially the dialogue) just yank that emotion and remind you again that it's just a movie. Wrong Turn 2: Dead End has far far more superior acting skill than Wrong Turn 3's. With the exception of Tamer Hassan and Borislav Iliev (the mutant father). The CGI is unfortunately very awful and lame, this also might disappoint seasoned horror fans very much. There are some plot holes, which would be crystal-clear for nitpicking movie buffs out there but I really did force myself to overlook that, for the sake of entertainment that afternoon.
Nevertheless, even with awful acting, the script could really hook you up. The most powerful point of the story? Is to give the drama along the way with the action and the horror, and NOT in the beginning of the movie. The script turns what is supposed to be just a simple backwoods slasher movie becomes a game of survival involving honesty, greed, bravery and honor. Instead of putting the cannibal mutants as the main villain, there are also villains with really evil spirit amongst the inmates and the prison officers. The soundtrack is neat, creepy and really fit the mood. But for the fans of Wrong Turn series, it'd be a big bummer knowing that there's practically only 1 mutant throughout the movie...
But this direct-to-video horror flick also gain advantage from the steady fast pacing leaving me no time to think about anything else. Besides the body count is high without being illogically high, they die for good reason (well, good in a brutal way that is though). And now speaking of the gore and the killing methods, whow, I feel like living in the 80's again, f*cked up creative! But without making you utterly repulsive as in Saw series or other extreme Japanese horror. But I do remind you, most of the killings are graphically on-screen with head got cut off, head got slashed with a sickle, to regular gunshots and intense brutal duel between 2 inmates. Plus there's one grisly demise of a naked woman that is anything but titillating, you might wanna provide your shoulder in case you girlfriend's got weak stomach.
Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead has outdone the first Wrong Turn is so many levels, and has provided the fans exactly what they wanted. And even though I still admire Wrong Turn 2: Dead End more, but I really enjoyed watching Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead and I think slasher or horror fans out there would have a fairly good time too. Though, again, taste does vary.
