Tsk tsk tsk, there're just lots of unimaginable ways for people to earn money to pay their bills. From selling a kidney to making a porn. Both of which have been proven actually difficult to realize. And movie world is very adept at taking this theme and this time it falls to the mainstream comedy genre. Although making a porn as the subject of the comedy is not new anymore, at least in 2003, National Lampoon released their "National Lampoon's Barely Legal" and in 2004 we got "The Girl Next Door".
But of course, big names do sell, and biggie names like Seth Rogen (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up) and Elizabeth Banks (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Slither) do imply better acting performances. And Zack and Miri Make a Porno actually is a good comedy movie and a sweet romantic flick also. It's a movie where couples could both have fun watching it. Porn and Romantic? Nice combination I'll say...
Zack and Miri Linky are roommates. But they don't have any feelings for each other and they share their bills evenly, you could compare them to Rachel and Joey of Friends or Chrissy, Janet and Jack of Three's Company if you like. Their monetary problem arises when Zack is unable to pay the bill, despite that it's his turn to do so. He's broke, Zack (Seth Rogen), who works at a local coffee shop, couldn't afford it for having bought an expensive sex toy on the internet. Things got worse when the landlord finally cut off the water and the electricity, leaving them no options but to make an amateur porn movie.
So Zack and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) are rushing to assemble the cast and crew and also a producer who is Zack's friend in the coffee shop, Delaney (Craig Robinson from Knocked Up, D-War). With very limited budget they just gotta have to make do with what little they have, even including acting in their own movie. Although Zack and Miri have seen each other naked for so many time, but this time they feel something different even before they start to shoot the scene. Will this project change their relationship? Do they really just 'acting' in their movie or is it a real spark of love? And could they finally pay all the bills?
The big question for most people I guess is, "is this a porn movie?" Or is it just a cheap effort of mainstream movie filmmakers to earn some cash? Neither. If you're already familiar with Seth Rogan, you would know this movie offers something more than just women's flesh. Seth Rogan who has been in famous comedy like The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Step Brothers and Superbad is back on the leading role similar to his role in Knocked Up. A grown up man who learns to be responsible for his life. And although I'm not a fan of his rude f-word spitting character, but his performance in this film is good. But of course the real star is Elizabeth Banks who performs very well as the sympathetic woman and could show her talent in a romantic flick.
This comedy movie is on one hand is actually a chick flick, a movie that girls usually drag their unwilling boyfriends to watch it with them. And as guy myself, of course I actually wished to see some flesh of Elizabeth Banks, recalling that she's also the star of the so-called 'porn movie' in this movie. Well, Elizabeth Banks didn't do any nude scene in here, but the love scene of Zack and Miri is actually a sweet one and the pivotal point that turns this movie into something more meaningful, into something more classier than just some rude crude f-words with dirty jokes. So if she had gone nude in this scene, it would've just ruined the whole thing. And I really don't like the F-words usage in this comedy film, which by the way Superbad is much more superior in quality if I had to make a comparison of those F-words usage. It appears that Zack doesn't know any other words than F, yeah..., to say it simply the storyline is almost as stupid as a real porn flick. Still, in Zack and Miri Make a Porno, the dialogues are quite clever like when they're creating titles for their movie like "Star Whores", "Revenge of the Sh!t" and stuff.
Nevertheless, the jokes are actually funny if you could handle the racist ones. Knocked Up was also full of racist jokes by the way, so if you have seen it, then you wouldn't be so surprised, although I have to remind you that some people would probably be very insulted by them. Finally, we have the real porn stars Traci Lords and Katie Morgan. And Wow! She's not just topless in here but Katie Morgan really could act. Traci Lords dialogue with Elizabeth is also a good scene. She should be thinking of moving into mainstream movies just like several adult stars in Japan have done.
So I guess, if you could handle the sarcastic unsympathetic character of Zack and the racist jokes, you should definitely pick this one up. It's a very hilarious comedy taking up a theme of porn and not Porn taking up a theme on comedy. And Zack and Miri is also much much more believable than NL's Barely Legal. At least a rent is a must for those seeking for a good adult-theme/chick-flick movie. It's just too bad that the name of the title sparks heated controversy, because even the nudity in this movie is handled with a vast amount of comedy.
